Ok,as you have prolly gathered i'm lookin at buying a nav system to put in the car,i have been told by different people to buy this and not that, and as far as buyin the other dont go there.
So what i want to konw is who has got what in their car and why

Why is it called Alcoholics Anonymous when the first thing you do is stand up and say, 'My name is Ray, and I am an alcoholic'?
I bought mine 15 months or so ago now (Navman F20), not a huge amount has changed from what I can see.
Basically at the time I didn't want to spend a fortune and at the end of the day I just wanted it to be clear and precise rather than have all the extra stuff like camera, voice directions, bluetooth, make phone calls or whatever other stuff was on offer at the time.
It has not failed me once and has spent a great of deal in the car as well as other cars for various interstate trips.
Downsides after all this time, it is a little on the slow side to startup and get a fix on the current location but no huge biggie, you know the general way to go so it will catch up in a few minutes, worst case scenario you have to do a u-turn.
Other than the above it would be nice to have a bigger screen but having said that I rarely use the screen once programmed and only really listen to the voice commands when prompted.
Out of the big brands Navman was about the cheapest and to this day I'm glad I purchased it.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Darren
Navman S50,missus has taken it so i dont know how it is.
used all 3 brands, then straight away purchased a tomtom, kills the others in my opinion.
I have a navman ICN510 unit. It is about 4 years old now. The only problem that I have had with it was some of the maps didn't have some roads near my place on it. (not Navman's fault though as they use Whereis maps). The 2007 Whereis maps have fixed all the roads in my area, but the 2007 maps won't work on the older unit, so I have my Navman ICN510 packed in a box ready to send back tommorow for a trade in to a later model with the latest maps, for the cost of the maps only.

HP PDA and Bluetooth GPS receiver running Tom Tom Navigator is mine, better than the dedicated Navman GPS unit I had and very easy to update points of interest and the like when needed
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
Tom tom here, had a nav man and hated it.
TomTom FTW!!!
I have a TomTom One XL that I got for free (I had a few excess frequent flyer points). I would never have paid money for one but it's handy as a national street directory replacement. Certainly handy for when I go interstate. Don't really need it around Canberra.
Some advice:
Never leave it, or any signs of it, visible in your car. Remove the satnav unit, the mount(s) and any cables etc.
Wipe off any residual ring marks left on the windscreen from any mounts.
DO NOT mount it smack bang in the centre of the windscreen like I've seen so many knobs do.
DO NOT put your home address anywhere in the unit. Most have a "Home" shortcut. Set that as something different. Mine is set to the local Police Station. Having your name and number in it are OK though - for anyone honest enough to want to return it to you should you lose it.
That is all.

Melways FTW!
But when I do get one, it will be Navman. Ability to skip suburb and search state wide for a street is awesome.
I can search for a street Australia wide on my TomTom![]()
What he said. Have used all 3 brands and TomTom ****s all over the others.
Not the same as the Navman. It inputs Street, suburb, number (or something like that) where the TomTom needs the suburb first. That is the only feature which I miss - otherwise Navman gets crushed in every other way.

I'll agree with the other guys here, I sell all 3 brands at my ****kicker job and tomtom is by far the easiest to use and fastest in both calculating routes and navigating the menus. Bought my old man a tomtom one xl, he's been very pleased with it and we haven't had any issues with it yet. Also all the extra free stuff you can find on the net for em comes in handy...
iv got a tomtom and compaired to my boss's garman tomtom is so much better. not to sure about the navman havent really looked at them much.
Got the new series of TomTom, great unit. Speaks the street names, you can put celeb voices on it, it has bluetooth, FM radio, MP3 player/pic viewer, first aid help, even tells you how to maintain your car![]()
tom tom one xl ftw!, easy to use,
has a nice small looking windscreen mount unlike a-lot of others

tom tom one xl for me. bought it from a retailer has been awesome for when i need to find clients in weird locations hasent failed once only let down is battery life has to always be plugged in.

*only power jack is in the centre console so my cable dosent reach any further than the middle of the windscreen, not to mention i use it in multiple vehicles.
*cant be assed cleaning the windscreen theifs would do me a favour if they stole the car anyway.
*home address is set... **** havin to type it in every time, im not paranoid
ive got a tom tom one xl gps and it is alot better than any other i have used.
the mount can be a pain in the ass sometimes though
i have to agree that tomtom can be picked up by anyone and learnt in 5 mins...if u can use a tomtom u can use garmin, it has the same layout, (state, suburb, street, number) just looks alittle different.
navman even i have trouble with because im used to tomtoms interface, but its good once u figure it out.
plus tomtom and navman have 2 year warranty standard...they arent easy to fix so the warranty can be a big help...
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.
PM with any info.
tom tom is good.
Old reply to an old thread!
Have a nav S30-its copped a hammering for about a year-gets used daily for work, speaker is a little scratchy at high volume, everything else perfect-great low cost unit, battery life is great and mounting system very easy to use.
Me missus wants me to get one, but I prefer to exercise me brain and use a street directory in book form. Before I go anywhere new I use map.google then mark out the pages in the UBD. The missus is the navigator, thats why she wants me to get a gps. When she gets sick of been the nav I'm sure she will buy me one...in which case will be a tomtom
ha ha i vote the wises map book lol it dosn't talk to me when i need info i can get it an if it pi**es me off i can chuck it out the window and get a new one ( for not much $$ ) . plus it has the added advantage of that no one wants to smash ur windows to steal it and make it theres
