and then the sudden surge from the turbo would make the car powerslide into a pole and kill you.
gotta be quick on that wheel!

not sure how exact these are as i took them from the products websites and they might be .... wrong.

A turbo is a lot better than a raptor or any kind of centrifugal blower. Power figures mean nothing

Inefficient and only hit peak boost high in the rev range unlike a turbo which hits full boost earlier and stays there for the rest of the rev range

and still has to use engine power to turn the pulley, unlike a turbo. if youre after that form of power delivery, you would just go turbo

Really depends on the application, and bang for buck.
But i dont think you can beat the noise of a supercharged V8

I like both turbo and SC. The SC turns heads and has great street manners. Turbo is more powerful overall.

so the blower is easier to drive around town i take it. i only ask as i've never driven a supercharged car only a twin turbo supra and a xr6turbo and both where quite lively

As long as you don't boot it everywhere a turbo car is no harder to drive than an n/a car (within reason)

let me put it this way :

when supercharging a V8 you already know that you car is fast ... and go faster

but turbos surprise you when your car is underpowered *4 or 6* lol, and the turbo kicks in, you feel happy and become proud of your piece of rice

anyway, both are really great, but on a V8 I'd Charge it right up

That's funny. So many people here talking about which is better based upon what they've heard..

How many of you have actually driven both turbocharged and supercharged V8s? 6s? 4s? How many have never even driven (not ridden in, DRIVEN) a FI car ever?

They are both potentially very good setups, but centrifugal SCs seem a bit of a let down (only type I haven't experienced yet).. between a PD blower and a turbo/TT setup, it comes down to personal preference. I'm going to go with a turbo on my V6 for a number of reasons, including that the turbo is far more efficient at making power than its belt-driven cousins.

i drove a roots blown v6 for years. just from knowledge i know that a centrifugal is the worst, and that a turbo is just an awesome piece of engineering

Don't get me wrong stocky, I wasn't having a go at anyone in particular, and I know you've personally had some impressive results from the humble SC14 in the past! Just wondering how much of the talk on here is actually from experience, that's all. Seems to be a lot of people around who know about things because 'their mate did ......' or 'they heard ...... once'

yeah i agree. its like whenever someone posts up a "i want to supercharge my car" thread, people will often say "get a raptor, they seem to get good results" without actually knowing what theyre talking about

haha yeah.. mind you, even though they are the yucky sort of supercharger, the raptor is reportedly an easy fit and for that reason alone should appeal to a lot of people.

Well they do make power and very easy to install and remove etc and do allright but the problem is......

It's attached to the motor and has an impeller much the same as a turbo. So drive off and you get your boost with the rpm of the motor
    0 psi
    1 psi
    2 psi
    3 psi
    4 psi
    5 psi
    6 psi
    7 psi *shift gear*
    3 psi
    4 psi

Ok so for all the important part of the power curve when taking off you have basically no extra power and a good NA manifold can quite easily make several psi of pressure on it's own anyway. There are a few fast centrifugal cars around but they run pretty huge stall converters, using an engine that has enough grunt to get off the line in the first place without boost makes these blowers OK (large V8's) the majority of the cars don't perform however. There's a local LS1 here that runs a Vortec and is very fast on not many psi and a 4000 rpm stall?
    YouTube - LS1 vs LS1 SC, Southcoast raceway 4-4-08
This car ^, might get another video of it this week no that it's running more boost (385 rwkw)

Now with a turbo it's not driven by anything except exhaust gas so once it starts spinning it pumps more air into the motor which makes the motor make more exhaust which spins the turbo faster which makes more exhaust < repeat x 1000. All that happens in an instant and the turbo can be spinning at full speed in 1000 revs
    0 psi
    1 psi
    2 psi
    3 psi
    4 psi
    10 psi
    20 psi *shift gears*
    18 psi
    20 psi
YouTube - Driver Dynamics Drift Day 2
    Lukes VN@20 psi ^^ (skilled)

So it's easy to see the advantages of a turbo, A roots type blower has an advantage over both at low rpm because it doesn't use a fan to compress the air so it can work any at rpm, straight off idle pretty much but they do cost alot of horse power to turn and get hot etc

Each has it's own suited application. If I was building a drag car, I'd run a roots/twinscrew s/c setup. For a circut car I'd go with a turbo setup, although if turbo's weren't suited, then centrifugal setup.

For a boat, roots all the way. Heat doesn't become a problem with the right intercooler (whipple make a very nice one)

in a attempt to understand the different types of supercharger i found this on the how stuff works site "
Centrifugal superchargers are the most efficient and the most common of all forced induction systems. They are small, lightweight and attach to the front of the engine instead of the top. They also make a distinctive whine as the engine revs up -- a quality that may turn heads out on the street. "
