problem misdiagnosed as HDD failure... help

Replaced the HDD in my old Compaq Presario 2800, still having same problem. Laptop will power up every time, but only occasionally (VERY rarely) even gets up to displaying anything on the monitor. It blips on, the CD drive spins up fine and the HDD starts and runs fine.

Help me, I need ideas from educated people and really want to get this thing running again.

:'( seems it's most likely a cooked motherboard...

getting it checked out soon enough hopefully.
