used to get seagates. last couple of drives have been WD though. had no issues with them so far
seagate
western digital
i call my computer a hard drive
i've always been into Seagate, had a bad run with them for a while, but it was because of user error (if 5-10 books bouncing off it is user error)
now i've got one wd green tb and all the rest are 500 gb seagate barracudas.
just curious to learn about peoples experiences and what everyones preferred brand is for speed, quietness, reliability etc.
also now that seagate has bought out maxtor, do you think maxtor quality will go up? never had one to have a problem with, but heard things.

1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
started using seagate, had a couple of old maxtors fail, had a samsung fail, started using wd's a few years back coz they were cheaper, had one fail a few months back. id suspect because of a brown-out. really need to get a surge protector oneday
i'll keep using wd for now.
i've got 5 hard drives, 4 are seagate and 1 is a samsung. seagate used to be the best, apparently wd shit all over them now though. it depends how lucky you are really... one of my seagates is a 60gb which is at least 6 years old. been on nearly every day since then and it's still going. another one of my newer sata seagates packed up within a few months, sent it off, only for the one i got back to pack up in another few months.
Western Digital. Although the Seagate in the other computer is still going strong, 5 years after it was put in.
<<<< The information went data way! >>>>
Your poll is skewed now. I picked Seagate by accident.
Next person that wants to vote Seagate has to vote WD or we're all doomed.
Edit: BTW I have a mix of Seagate and WD's in all my PC's (12 or so drives in total i think) neither has died yet..
Looking for VR/VS S1 Calais Door mouldings in good cond. PM ME IF YOU HAVE SOME PLZ!
i'v had 2 wd fail at six months of age
havent had a problem with seagate or maxtor

Even in our sleep we happen to be right.

I had a WD drive fail after 6 months (320GB) but all my other WD drives have been fine (5 of them 320-1tb) internal and external 3.5" and in different computers.

I've always been a Seagate man, until they started having problems a few months ago. At the moment my main PC has two Western Digitals (a 320 and a 1TB), have to say, Western Digital has come a long way...they used to be one of the worst bloody drives you could buy (apart from Maxtor).

ive got a mox of discs but mainly seagate, havnt had a problem with either brand though. the only discs that ever failed were an old 120mb and a 850mb. there was also a 1.6 which had a nummber of bad sectors.
Out of all the HDDs I've ever had, only 1 failed me and it was a Seagate. Didn't worry me as it was fairly old and IDE, only a 160gb drive so no major loss. Currently have a 750gb WD Green power in my PC and I love how quiet it is compared to others. Once I've got a semi decent PSU my PC will be damn near silent.
If I had to choose, I'd go WD Green power over anything else due to the perfect price/size/noise ratio, but before I worried about noise (I used to have 2 bigarse 110CFM Panaflo fans in the front of my case. Nothing was louder than them bastards) I just picked whatever had the best priceize ratio. All in all it's much of a muchness, and often comes down to personal preference.
In all our home computer we have had Seagate HDD, reliable no corruptions etc, bought one External Maxtor 500gb, NEVER again! as it corrupted after 6months.
Western Digital have good rep with most of their Internal ones, but after what I have seen at work, the amount of Western Digital Externals that get returned to us over faults, has made me advise Seagate over WD.
But WD's Velociraptor is still top of list =P

At present I have a mixture of WD and Samsung which I need to send back (all 750GB+) and they really aren't hammered that much. I used to run Seagate but had a fairly bad run, I tend to upgrade my drives fairly regularly so I'm not phased and warranty is always there.
The JC server runs WD and touch wood there hasn't been any problems although given they are close to 12 months old and hammered on a regular basis I wasn't expecting them to last.
Seagate, for usre. Basing this purely on personal experience. I've had nothing but trouble with Western Digital drives. They're loud, slow and just overall pieces of crap. : )
That being said, though, my external Western Digital 'passport' drive works a treat - hasn't missed a beat!
All three of mine are Seagate, two are a bit over 12 months old and one is only a few weeks...........think one of the older ones is on the way out though, works fine but making death rattles.
WD used to be the shit to have for nearly 20 years from the early 80s. Early this decade they had all sorts of issues and were quite unreliable for a while. In recent years (last 5 or so) they seem to be about as reliable as anybody. Seagate have always been solid performers. Maxtor were interesting. Nobody ever touched them with a 10' pole if you wanted a drive to last but then they merged with Quantum and have been fine ever since.
Overall any of those 3 seem to be ok and are prone to a small amount of failures similar to any manufacturer of electronic parts.

Well, out of all the probably hundreds of drives I've seen over the years...
90% of the failed drives were Quantum drives (especially the Fireball series), until Maxtor drives starting showing up and Quantum drives dropped off the radar, then Maxtor took over the 90% of failures.
I think I've seen about 2 failed Seagate drives in my experience over the last 8 years, compared to at least a few dozen Maxtors.
I don't understand why Seagate bought Maxtor. To me it seemed like a really stupid move.
I've seen very few WD drives, and two of them were stuffed when I saw them.
I'm running 160, 250 and 400gb Seagates in my computer at the moment, had a bit of a scare when the 250gb drive had a couple of bad sectors appear, but I think that was actually Windows' fault as running Seatools fixed the issue and nothing has happened since then.
We're running HP computers at the site I work at now, haven't had a single drive fail in them - they're all running Seagate. I wish I could say the same for the old TPG and ASI computers we were getting with their Maxtors.
I will continue to buy only Seagate... I don't generally touch new products as they're too expensive and I prefer other people to find out if they're crap products or not, so I generally never have hardware problems. I've never had a hard drive die on me.
Personally i choose Western Digital, mainly because of the problems i have seen with seagate.
This was a few years ago, but i used to work at a computer shop as a technician (nothing spesh, just repairing, building PCs and stuff, we built and supplied NMIT with a lot of their current PC's), and i kept seeing customers coming back with dead hard drives, after having them for only 2 - 3 months. We had about 50 customers come back, not all from the same batch too.
So this put me off seagate, i'm sure western digital have their problems as well, but i've never had a problem with them so i'll continue to buy their products![]()
my mate just told me his servers seagates are dying, but they've been up and spinning 3 years straight now. he's not phased, RAID and seagates warranty to the rescue
there is a new memo out about a certain seagate 500 gigg h/d having failure rates of 40 percent and more
I used to only use seagate drives until my barracuda 500g kept making wierd click sound, was taking ages to boot windows etc.
Sent it back to seagate only to receive the next THREE hard disks they sent me did the exact same thing.
The fourth drive they sent me worked fine and has been in my crappier computer for few years now.
Ended up buying Western Digital 1tb and never had any problems or bad sectors. I wouldn't pay for a seagate hard disk again.
