    Default Windows 7 Prices

Microsoft has now released the prices for Windows 7.

Customers who buy a computer with Vista installed on it between Friday 26th June and Thursday 22nd October will receive a FREE update to Windows 7.

In Australia, the Home Premium version of Windows 7 will cost $299, the Professional version will be $449 and the Ultimate version comes with a price tag of $469. Compare all of this to Apples new Snow Leopard OS, coming in at a massive US$29!!!

There is no pre-order options available, where as in the US customers can pre-order the new OS with a special pre-order discount of 50% off all versions.

For those who can afford it, Windows 7 will hit shelves in Australian on Friday 22nd of October.

I totally agree with Tom, Vista and XP are now no longer in my thoughts when reformatting any of my families PC's. By that time it comes out as OEM There will be someone needing an upgrade allowing me to get more and more OEM versions to cover the machines I Manage..

Since Microsoft is giving out free licenses which will last till june 2010, that should be enough time to get tired of windows 7 and ones the hype is over you could just go back to XP

It's only a shipping and handling fee, so while it does cost you, it's technically a free upgrade....

Yeah, like hell I'm going to pay that much money for an operating system.

Good thing I'll have access to OEM and TechNet licenses.

Well Vista has been nothing but one issue after another. For instance the two reinstalls over the past week. I'll be hanging out for windows 7!

This is what I don't understand, a lot of people seem to bag Vista but at the end of the day it ALWAYS comes down to their own doings ie drivers, choice or hardware /system or dodgy apps installed.

I have been running Vista Ultimate 32 bit since the day it came out and not once have I had to do a reinstall or repair.

A fellow co worker also has not had any problems with Vista so I don't know what people do to kill it.

OEM pricing is flowing out at the moment, off the top of my head prices look something like the following:
    7 Home Premium OEM - ~$115 - $130
    7 Pro OEM - ~$170 - $190
    7 Ultimate OEM - ~$200 - $220

I have ordered the Win 7 Ultimate retail, at the end of the day I don't care what it costs, I use my computer on a daily basis and I'll gladly put money back in MS pocket each time they bring out a new OS which isn't exactly every year. I look at this way, I paid roughly $400 for Vista some 2.5 years ago I guess, to me that's pretty cheap for something which can run anything I want it will cost me stuff all in the process. Once Win7 goes on I can sell Vista and someone can use it again on whatever system they want with validation issue's so again even cheaper for me, not something that you can really do with OEM.

I'm over the whole I need find a crack for this so I don't mind it.

well that's just it isn't it? it's quite annoying to upgrade your OS to find that half of your devices aren't supported, and half of your software doesn't work. so you have to go out and buy all this new stuff, just to get your computer working the way it was with the old OS. then you find out that there is not one thing vista can do that xp can't - and you also find out that vista is slower in every aspect compared to XP. XP is still the most compatible OS to date. and that is important, because so many people run old hardware and software. what's the point in upgrading if it already works?

so that's why i bag vista - simply put it provides no benefit over XP. i might give windows 7 a shot on my netbook, but even then i've seen some performance tests on netbooks and XP is STILL faster than 7. plus 7 cut down the battery life by 2-3 hours under heavy load! useless. even if they fix the battery problem, i still doubt that windows 7 will provide me with any real world benefit over XP at all.

XP was, still is, and probably will be the best operating system ever made.

For all those Uni / TAFE students not covered by CAUDIT or some other form of enterprise agreement, you may be able to cheaply (and legally) get some licences through the IEEE for $32US

IEEE - Microsoft Software Offer for IEEE Student members

I picked up 10 Win7 Pro licences (5x 32bit, 5x 64bit) as well as some more XP Pro, Vista, Office and Server licences.

It takes about a week from the time I sent payment til I was allowed access to get the serial numbers and download the software.
