TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux
i've used this for encrypting a pcs whole system drive (so it can't boot and the disk will be useless even in another machine), you can also use it to make password protected 'containters' on disks including externals.
frmo the FAQ
How can I use TrueCrypt on a USB flash drive?
You have two options:
1. Encrypt the entire USB flash drive. However, you will not be able run TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive.
Note: Windows does not support multiple partitions on USB flash drives.
2. Create a TrueCrypt file container on the USB flash drive (for information on how to do so, see the chapter Beginner's Tutorial, in the TrueCrypt User Guide). If you leave enough space on the USB flash drive (choose an appropriate size for the TrueCrypt container), you will also be able to store TrueCrypt on the USB flash drive (along with the container – not in the container) and you will be able to run TrueCrypt from the USB flash drive (see also the chapter Portable Mode in the TrueCrypt User Guide).
this is some more specifics on running it on an external

I think the real question here is what have you got loaded on your external hard drive that you don't want people to see?![]()
Must be all that home-made pr0n :P
But yeah, +1 for the TrueCrypt option.
Yeah another +1 for encryption.
Bypassing a password on a HDD isn't that hard for an average pleb whereas it takes a little more to figure out an encryption.
It depends on why you want to hide your stuff. If it's 'pr0n' hidden from the missus or kids, password is fine. Basically unless you have powerful financial or legal information that can land in in hot water, password should be fine.
Or buy a $30 safe since the drive is external.
