really depends how much dosh you have and what you want it to sound like. loudness or quality?
I have a logitech 5.1 surround setup but only use the 2 front ones and sub, have the sub turned rite down though.
I only have the setup so I can hear it, noone else. (thats what the system in the cars for lol)
Most of the time I use headphones though.
Speakers are pretty cheap these days for a decent 5.1ch surround.
priced at $80 - $100

My car audio:
CD tuner: Alpine CDA-9884E with Ipod interface
Front speakers: Alpine Type R SPR-17S 6.5 component speakers, powered by a avant-garde 23dxi 2 channel amplifier - 2x51 watt RMS
Rear speakers: pioneer coaxials connected to tuner
Subwoofer: Alpine Type R SWR-1222D 12" 2 ohm dual voice coil 500 watts RMS powered by a response precision 2x150 watts RMS 2 channel amp bridged to 500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms
got those 5.1 logitecs, some other ones and if any of you are gamers you will know what these are if also go a set of Astro A-40 headphones easily best heap phones out (better be for $500)
If your sound card has digital out (usually yellow plug) I would get some Boston Acoustics. They sh!t all over any speakers I have previously seen in 14yrs of IT.
Oh and I've had my set almost 10yrs without fault.
I have them, they're really quite good, very satisfying bass. They can be made to work well with music but you need a player with an equaliser built-in like winamp or something similar.
I also have a set of Logitech Z-3s, which have now been replaced by the slightly inferior Z-4s (no seperate tweeter anymore, but they're still bloody good speakers.). I had my Z-3s at work for a while (inside a giant hanger-like building, not ideal acoustic environment...) and got soooo many comments on how good the sound out of them was.
I've got a 2.2 setup.
Consists of:
Sony MHC-RG495
Plus an extra Viewmaster Subwoofer from a 2.1 system. The two speakers are sitting behind my monitor, not going to connect them as without them i can control the bass from that one sub better. Not much details on this system online though. It's a Viewmaster TSM333, about 5 or 6 years old now.
Oh and yes, i do like my music loud, so the whole system worked out nicely.
Great system. Clear and loud too, never regretted buying them with the whole thought of using them as my computer speakers. Only dislike is no DMPORT option. But i can live without that i guess, i've got a computer to plug my iPod into :P I dont even use the DMPORT that's connected to the Bravia.
If i was going to get new speakers i would probably look at upgrading my computer system so there's HDMI or optical output at least and look at the Sony 7.2 Surround Sound Muteki. They're awesome!![]()
Thread dig i know, but i never saw it until now.
NAD C326BEE amp
NAD C515BEE CD player
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers
AKG 272 High Definition Head phones
Connected to PC via 3.5 mm to 2 RCA cable
I know it's not your typical computer speaker setup, but it does connect to the computer.

I have a set of Zalman Headphones that I stole of my brother. Ah the ability to tune other peoples annoying voices out.
Though I did have fun playing Quake 4 (using rocket launcher), with the laptop hooked up to my car using 3.5mm input. Holy poo batman that was bassy.
