    Default Laptop keeps turning off!!!

    Hey,
i have a toshiba satellite pro A210 running windows XP,
First off it keeps turning off, if i try to start it back up it turns on for a second the back off, if i leave it for like 5 minutes it might make it to the windows loading screen, if i leave it for an hour i can use it for 15 etc...

so the longer i leave it off, the longer i can use it before it automatically switches off.. its switchng off like it has a flat battery... (But it dosent)

Also it wont boot without the battery (even with external power)
And wont boot without external power (With battery)

Its Making a ticking noise (jjust under 1second gap between ticks)
and its only a little louder than a watch..

also every second tick my Hdd light on my laptop flashes, like its in time with it..

All these problems started at the same time so im guessing there related..

    Whats wrong with my laptop??

    Thanks

Does it feel warm, sometimes they turn off when hot.

When you have it on try to have it elevated so the fan can get good circulation.

No computer geek, but just something I picked up with works laptops.

nuh its not because the computer is hot,
although i think it might be heat related, as that would explain why the longer i leave it off, the longer it will stay on when i turn it back on

First and easiest thing to look at would be dust on the intake and outtake vents. If you have access to compressed air a quick shot in the vents can help.

I had an iMac that did the same thing. Sometimes it would last days before turning itself off, sometimes it was minutes.

Turned out to be a dodgy power supply.

Given that you've found it won't boot unless you have both the external power and the battery, it's looking like the power/charging system circuit is the culprit. Logically, it can't be the battery itself, or the power supply, because then you'd expect it to work with one of them removed.

If you're electronically minded you could try dismantling and inspecting for dry solder joints or damage around around the power components on the motherboard. Other than that you may just have to cut your losses and get a new laptop. With the rate at which computers move, it's usually not economical to repair laptops if they develop a serious fault.
