hey guys,
looking at getting a 100m Ethernet cable does anyone know where i could possibly get 1 in Adelaide? other then ebay...
thanks
you should probably look into the length limits behind ethernet cables first

You could buy a 100m roll from Dick Smith and just add the connectors to the ends.
Should add that the stuff DS sells is Cat5E, so should be capable of 100m+
100 metres is the maximum unrepeated length of CAT5 UTP cable (assuming thats what youre using). do you absolutely need that length or can you go shorter?

yeh i probs need 100m will hav to measure the length, cable will b going from 1 house though the roof then makin its way to the granny flat in the backyard which is some distance..
will it lose its speed? im guessing ther will be some loss unless i get a good quality 1
wouldnt be easier to go wireless? 100 metres is quite a distance, so you could always buy that length, and trim any extra length off you might not need just to avoid any issues

what kind of issues? want to inform me? otherwise ill just go buy another router then
yeh i can go wireless but thought it would be a better connection with cable
just loss of speed, possibly data. im not too sure. thats where you would just buy a repeater to regenerate the signal, which shouldnt cost too much.

hmm i might go into a few shops this weekend n talk to a few guys n see what they think
yeh thanks guys, see how things go this week might just go wireless router just gotta find a decent 1 with good range
most wireless networks will generally have about 100 metres range anyway, depending on what obstacles are in the way

just walls m8 just walls lol...although the main comp is almost near the sliding door to outside other then that its just grass n paved area then the granny flat
yeah should be able to reach it no worries. my wireless switch is at the back of the house, yet i can still use the internet from my laptop while sitting in the car out on the street. comes in handy when im trying to fix something and need to research it

90m is the limit on cat5-6 cable, anything after that u have packet loss and due to the retransmissions its going to slow right down if ur lucky. go Wireless preN router and wireless PCI/PCIe card internal is better than a usb dongle, has good range and still should be a good signal 100ms away providing there isnt too many trees or buildings in the way, clear line of sight will give u max speeds.
I'm pretty sure the limit is 100m. What you might be thinking of is the limit on the length of cable for the installation of a new data point... so, say if you have a data cabinet and you want to install a new data point somewhere in the building, the run of cable should not be more than 90m. That allows for a bit of play with a patch lead in the cabinet plus the ethernet cable from the data point to your computer/phone/fax/printer, whatever it might be.
In this case though he wants to run a lead straight from the switch/router to another computer. The limit then would be 100m as he doesn't have to allow for any patch leads or anything.
id say those limits also include 100 installation compolicance ie. distance from power cables, correct bend radius...
you should be ok with CAT6 just make sure you buy good quality cable and RJ45's... make sure you run it underground, UTP tends to attract lightning withought proper conduit.
aZk.

just stick with a router.. it'd be cheaper that way... $350 for a dlink or go better with say Linksys and Belkin?
talk to the tech guys in what ever store you walk into, read into it to make sure you know what your going to get from it.
100m of cable would be more than $400 i would think (i could be wrong though) not to mention you have to dig a route outside for it etc....
Damnit. The one topic I'm actually qualified to answer, and i missed the thread.
100m really is pushing it, you can try and might get lucky... If you were still wanting the cheap way out, get your 100m of cable... Buy 50m worth of extension cable, and put a low end 10/100 hub, or a repeater, in the middle, and somehow make it safe from the weather. But that really is the dodgy choice...

$50 mateBut you will of course want some conduit to go with it... And some way of getting power to the middle, where the repeater or hub would live.
just go to MSY-The Name you can trust-More than 10 years in IT industry-Nationalwide branches serve you & always offer the best up today IT price they have a few stores in S.A. they sell a 100m cable for $40 and wireless routers and stuff like that... 100m is the max which you can go with cat5e and when u reach the limits of that you will experience it going slightly slower, but like Fonzie said just buy a cheap 10/100 router and stick it in the middle and you wont have any problems... remember also that most the cheaper wireless routers are limited to about 54mbps transfer anyways :P whereas a cat5e can do up too 100mbps...
