Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone may have done this and have some helpful advice for me
We've got foxtel in the formal lounge that we rarely use and I would like to relocate it to our family room. I'm hoping to be able to split the cable and keep the outlet in the loungeroom and have one in the family room? Is this possible, and if so will splitting it deminish picture quality at all? If that is the case can we jsut relocate it permanantly to the other room?
How hard is it to do, I would prefer not to have to get foxtel tech to do it if I can get around it. Also what cable would I need?
thanks Julie
i believe its just coaxial cable, which u have a few options
1. grab a splitter box/Y piece and tap it (cut add plugs for ease of use) into the cable in the roof, run new cable to the loungeroom down the inside of the wall and fit off with a wall plate purchased at say bunnings or elec store. move the foxtel box and see how the picture quality is.
2. same as 1, add plugs, but unplug the cable going to the formal lounge and remove the splitter box so u have a direct link (with plugs) so u can swap back to formal lounge if u so desire.
3. grab a powered spliter/booster box add plugs to accommodate, run new cable to new location, move box and enjoy.
Either way u will need to cut the cable and add plugs will make ur life easier down the track. some splitter boxes dont require plugs u just strip a bit of the wire and push in, and it screws and clamps on the bare wires.
I did this a few years back.
You need the correct ends and a Y joiner. Put the join in the roof cavity if possible to keep the weather off it. You should be able to get everything you need at jaycar/dicksmiths etc.

You can buy AV senders, haven't used them myself.
COCOON 5.8GHz Dual Input AV Sender and Receiver AVS58 (L6028) - Dick Smith Electronics - Australia.

av senders often suck for picture quality.
do you have under floor access?
Is there a unit that covers your cables and power points in the formail lounge?
Need some parts for my VH 253:
Green standard steering wheel...Green lower B-pillar covers.
Green sunglasses holder/lower dash bits...Air-con and assorted engine bay parts.
PM with any info.
Whether you use a splitter or Y joiner doesn't matter... just make sure you get the right type connections for the cable. I'm not entirely sure but I think they might use RG6. I would double check with a Foxtel installer first though, or have a look at the cable itself, it should have it printed on it every metre or so (RG6 or RG11 and so on). You might need to buy a stripping and crimping tool set for it too, might be a bit expensive but still cheaper than getting a sparky to do it for you.
You may also need to check the legalities of a DIY. Telstra usually don't approve of people playing with their network! If they do find out, it may come at a hefty cost to you.

I have a av sender and i wouldnt recommend them to anyone. Mine gets interferance when you walk around the house.
