Hey all,
i'm looking at building a new computer, but i'm a bit out of things
i worked in computer shops for a few years, but i stopped in 2006, so lets say all my computer knowlege is from 2005 haha. bit outdated now
i'm fine with installing hardware/software
just not sure what hardware to buy
i've always liked intel, i can get parts almost wholesale, looking to spend maybe $500 - $600 wholesale dollars
can anyone recomend good parts?
hoping, dual core 775skt 2.6ghz
4gb ddr 2/3 not sure which
500gb hdd for use, 250gb for backup unless there are other better sizes
video card of somesort
Any help or opinions would be great cheesr guys.
gidday sweefu, you will be pleased to know that you get so much more for your dollar now than in 2006.
there are several good Geek websites that will give you more information than you will ever need to know.
i would suggest at least going for 64 bit vista and you will also should be elidgable for the free 'windows 7' upgrade in coming months which will be an improvement on vista. (check the microsoft website for details)
for hardware i normally look through the umartonline website who are not too bad. you will see that Ram is way cheaper than what you would remember and likewise hard disk storage.
how much u looking at spending?
My system is currently 4 Sale for $1300 ono, am moving to queensland monday so could even deliver.
Its under the stuff 4 sale section.
Cheers for the help guys
Ozzie: looking to spend around $600 wholesale, my mate owns a computer shop. so sorry, couldnt look at spending $1300 but thankyou anyway.
Wiggy: Cheers mate i'll check out the website. i'm happy to hear that its cheaper, cus from what i've been reading people are using alot more haha. last computers i was building, the standard desktop was
3.0ghz p4 478skt
asus mobo, onboard graphics
512mb ddr400
80bg ide hdd haha
would 4gb ddr3 run quick?
with a 2.6 intel dual core?
Cheers again!
Dont go dual, get a quad core now, they're not that much more expensive and will last longer.... Then again i dont pay for my parts....
i'll go quad if i can afford it for sure mate, just not sure how my budget will go haha
I did a custom quote on centrecom, came up with the following for $1092.60 retail. Might be a tad cheaper for you if you can get it at cost. I don't think quads are worth it, I'm old school and still believe in good old fashioned clock speed. If money wasn't an issue then I'd probably still go quad, but considering your budget you'd be dropping ~500mhz to get a quad for the same price. Unless you run 50 applications at once or are a developer, you'll probably never use the extra cores anyway, but you will notice the [negative] difference in speed.

instead of getting an e8500 as the cpu, you'd be better off getting an e8400. you wouldnt notice any difference at all. as for the graphics card, if you want a cheaper one, consider a 9600gt or a HD4670. both cheap, but can still handle the latest games at medium settings.
Cheers for that mate i'll look into it. think the biggest game i play is the sims haha so anything should be fine.
I've sorta been leaning towards an amd phenon 2+ black series chip, can get the dual core 3.0ghz for around 100bucks so will probably end up going with an amd system
superbilling computers are your friends![]()
