Howdy all
After having Vista on the laptop since I bought it I was lucky enough to score a legit copy of Windows 7 cheap!
So away I went with the upgrade. Impressed so far, the laptops never run so quick!
BUT I do have an issue
I have Windows XP on the desktop, and I want to be able to transfer files between the 2 - plus also print wirelessly.
Now WIN7 is connected to the internet through the wireless router, it can see my desktop in the network, and the desktop can see it.
I am able to get into the laptop from the desktop, to transfer the files across which is good, however when I try to access the desktop from the laptop, to transfer files from laptop to desktop, its asking for a user name and Network Password?
Ive spent hours researching this and not one solution works. I dont have a password on the desktop, it sa family PC so it just has one account with no password.
Anyone else had this? All I need is for Windows 7 to stop asking me for a username and password and just access the damn desktop.
try this and see what happens:
on the desktop, create a new folder anywhere and name it however you like. right click it, and click "Sharing and Security". now tick the box that says "share this folder on the network". also tick the box that allows network users to change the files (so you can copy files to the desktop from the laptop when you're on the laptop). don't forget to set a share name, you can call it something simple like 'shared'.
now, there's 2 ways to access the folder. either go to run and type \\<DESKTOP COMPUTER NAME>\<SHARED FOLDER NAME>, or in windows 7 i'm not sure exactly how to do it (i'm on XP at the moment) but view the list of workgroup computers, and open up the desktop pc. the folder should appear and *hopefully* you'll be able to access it.
i'm hoping that the reason it's asking for a password is because nothing is shared on the desktop computer.
