If mainly gaming then in my personal opinion i would go for LCD. Select a few brands you think are decent then use Cnet for reviews on those TV's. That is the best way to go. I do it whenever I'm in the market to buy something new, and it never seems to fail me.
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
You want to be looking at a number of things, you want to be looking at
The Max Resolution. I think Full HD is 1920 X 1080
For Gaming i would recomend having at least 100hz reposnse time. 200hz is amazing.
And I would maybe look into LED backlighting since power is going up 65% in the next few years.
Stay away from Plasma. They are very cheap, but they are loud, and use about 350WATTS of power for the size you are after. A good LED LCD uses about 100-150 or less.
Be Looking around at something like this.

joe, ive been looking at around the same thing, looking for a 42" LCD for around that price
what you want is what edals said, nothing under 100hz, 1080p (I think it's 1080p not 1080i thats the better of the two
I was actually really looking into a Hisense 42", definatly not a brand I would run out and look straight to, but was talking to a bloke, they use good panels, they have 3 or 5 year in house replacement full stop, u ring em say theres something wrong they come out and give u a new one within 42hrs simple as that, no bullshit fixing ur tv, just striaght up a new one, was about $1500 probably gone down abit since i was looking
mostly for gaming? LCD hands down.
I bought a plasma recently, but it's mainly to watch sports and movies... and its on during the day sometimes, so daytime performance was important too. occasional xbox 360 use, but not enough to warrant going lcd and its inferior sports watching or daytime glare issues.
lcd still doesnt compare to plasma when it comes to watching sports though... getting better though. just pick up any review mag and you'll soon see what im talking about.

He's only right on the power consumption, as plasma does use more. Depends entirely on brand you buy regarding quality (like anything else). My 50" Panasonic Plasma (the 800A, Full HD) is neither cheap nor noisy, and outperforms most if not all LCD's out there- at least it did 12 months ago!
but the title of your thread says it all.... gaming = lcd.
size wise, it completely depends on the room you'll be putting it in- and the distance you'll be sitting at. having a big bertha tv in a bedroom will only get you upset at its apparent poor quality. great website with calculator explaining optimum viewing distance and angles vs screen size referring to THX standards can be found here:

being in IT, im always hearing about it. the quality of a 200hz LCD is amazing. a plasma will beat a cheap LCD, but not these new 200hz LCDs. the quallity and refresh speed is insane.
That Other Sony, I would not be sure. But hey, i still think the best way, go look at the TVs, talk to a sales person that knows what they are talking about, and watch something fast moving to see the quality of it.
For gaming go for LCD they have the best respose time.
Try and get a monitor if at all possible there the best for gaming.
Got a sharp 100hz 46" lcd. kicks ass looks great.
working in IT i'd never touch plasma, even the new neo plasma arent that flash.
When I was getting mine this one was 2600 (i got it a bit cheaper) rather go with sharp, considering all the high end sony stuff uses their components then a cheaper brand after experiences with awa, sanyo, samsung etc.
There was a 40" LED next to it the cheapest one on hte market..... the cheapest LED's were all under 3grand and none of them were worth it, yeah they are slimmer but the sharp, sony and even an LG looked better and ran better on power.
if I were you i'd just grab a cheaper LCD for now, when new tech comes out... it needs time to settle if you know what i mean, come two years from now LED will have been around for a bit, be much cheaper and much better.
You guys should be aware that these '100hz' tvs only operate in 100hz mode when on the tv....Im pretty sure that the AV inputs run at 60hz. At least thats whay my $3000 46' lcd does
I can't believe you placed Samsung in the cheaper brand category. Not too sure about right now, but I know their LCD panels could not be beaten at least a couple of years ago. I would imagine they would have tried to stay leaders in the game and am confident they would still be up there amongst some of the best LCD panels on the market.
I don't think too many people would be bothering with AV inputs these days if they have spent the money on a HD panel. I know I wouldn't bother buying an expensive HD TV and only feed it with a crappy SD signal, there's no point. You're much better off with a standard CRT panel in that case, it will outperform any LCD or plasma panel any day.
great point made on LED's.... they will be flooding the market in a few years and it wont be long after that where tv viewing will be changed forever. LED tech will allow cheap and HUGE tv screens... cheap as chips to run, and you'll be able to roll up your screens like a blanket when you are finished using them on half your wall.
dont spend too much on a tv now if you have a choice. get something a little cheaper (about $1000 will get you something decent that you'll be happy with). plasma and lcd will be left gathering dust once LED comes onto the scene.
and take advantage of the sales now! aussie dollar aint going up, so prices wont be coming down any time soon.
Hi guys ended up with a 40" full HD LCD samsung i couldnt be happier with it 1200$ 5 yr warrenty and hdmi cable thrown in was an excellent deal my god how you notice the difference i love it. thanks for the help i watched a blue ray dvd beforeis all i can say
MY VY SV8 HBD http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...y-sv8-hbd.html
nice choice. i sell tv's for a living and i think samsung are the best to go with. both me and my missus mum have samsungs. wouldn't go any other brand
my mate has a 32" samsung lvd full hd tv and it looks amazing and when i get my own hd tv its probably gonna be samsung on sony
Hey mate, I bought this tv about 2 weeks ago for gaming (xbox 360)
KDL-46Z5500 : Z Series : BRAVIA LCD TVs : Sony Australia
It was $2070, but hey worth every penny, a great performing tv.
I posted a similar question before I got the tv, It may help:
Buying a tv for xbox 360, any suggestions?
sorry but these days plasma's are amazing and FYI we have a 42" LCD in the loungeroom and a 50" Plasma in the bedroom and the LCD is LOUD... the plasma emites NO heat or sound and the picture is 100x better than the LCD.. i play car racing games occasionally and there is NO burn in or anything on the plasma.. (that was something that concerned me when buying one ) but anyway i got my Series 5 FHD Samsung for $1800 and am glad and very pleased with my purchase... plasmas have righer colours and darker blacks also
One other thing you will need a really good graphics card to play games on a screen that size. I would recommend also getting a graphics card that supports HDMI with sound inbuilt in the card. A 9800gt minimum I would suggest for nice clear and playable framerates.
