+1 AVG Free, never had any issues with it. I had my computer crash coz of a virus using Avast a few years back.
AVG and Avast are pretty average and somewhat annoying, when push comes to shove they probably won't do the job anyway (i've had viruses before and AVG found them but couldn't remove them), i'd recommend eset, it's light-weight and effective (mind you I havent had it for a few versions, cos I switched to mac) and served me well.
If youve got an immediate threat try trend micros online scan its free, just a java app - works good.
edit: looking at the trendmicro page now looks like theyve changed it to a down-loadable app, see how you go.
I use CA Security Suite - Firewall, Anti-virus, Spy-wear detector & backup/restore, Anti-spam, all in one.
also has website inspector for people who get stooged by fake websites and parental controls for parents with stupid kids, neither of which i have enabled.
Costs a whopping $20 per year if you pick a copy up from a computer swap meet and yes its a legit copy, only downside is its one copy per computer but at $20 its not bad, usually its $17 where i get it from.
Doesn't hog memory
They used to be Vet Anti-virus and the company is located in Richmond/St Kilda, Victoria
Vet is not as good once they were taken over by CA but still one of the better ones on the market, they are just a bit slow now on the updates, but usually have 1 per day.
Other then that kaspersky & Avast are the only other ones i would touch.
Trend is the 2nd biggest POS that finds a virus but does nothing about it, also finds alot of false/positives even when running it as a server/client based corporate version.
AVG Free is crappy and finds a whole bunch of false positives and the paid version is a memory hog and just as useless.
Mcafee as said is useless and memory hog.
Norton is the biggest POS ever made, completly ****s PC's over to the point they won't boot and if they will boot it takes 45 minutes.
Symentic Corporate Version is good if you have a high end pc but if not it will slow your computer down to a drag, home version is not so good.
For the few others which i haven't mention its because I've never used them, all the above i have used at home or in the work place.
I've had AVG for years and never had any virus issues. I have also had a computer running nothing for about 6 years as well and have never had any issues with that one either. Personally I would say your best defence is just common sense, if some site looks dodgy don't go to it, if you download ilegal shit expect to one day download a virus with it etc.
