There's a chip in my dad's PC between the PCI-e slots, double sided but only one side is used. One side has "SLI mode" written on it and the other has "normal mode". It's fairly obvious what this means however I only noticed its existence after his SLI setup cooked and I replaced it with a temporary single card solution. Is there anything WRONG with using the PC this way or should it really be reversed until the replacement SLI pair arrive?

It will be fine to run one GPU as opposed to 2 in the SLI Setup until you get it fixed up.
It will just mean less 'graphics power'.. does your dad play alot of games? What fried.. the mobo or the gpu's?
Cheers.
also, i can get you cheap case fans if your interested, but probably cheapest is Computer Hardware and Software Australia Online they have everything for computers mega cheap.
if you want me to get some for you let me know
what mobo is it (brand/part number)? SLI was fun for about 20 minutes till everyone realised you could just put two chips on one GFX card. and a lot of games dont even really utilise it fully. OT, anyway. is the "chip" a jumper? same as your cmos reset?
i doubt they would inbuild a terminal fault function on a mobo. itll just reset to optimal settings, otherwise they would have a spate of warraty claims. so yeah, i guess the answer is leave it, if it works then dont f... with it![]()
GPUs went, I think it was dust related. Had a fair bit in the case (just got it off one of his mates). Plays only older games so far, haven't found anything for him yet that'll run on 64bit Windows 7.
Sweet, will have a look.
Can't remember mobo spec, can have a look later if you want
Nah it's not a jumper, it's a chip about the size of a SODIMM RAM stick. We are moving to another SLI pair as I found a set on ebay for a decent price

its a bit strange cos' there should be a failsafe in the cmos for GPU overheat (dust related). couple of beeps and then kills the power. unless the option had been switched off...
if the card is xfx or similar brand it should have a lifetime warranty, but you gotta send it to HK. think it was 40 bucks postage for my 7900GT's (both started aliasing, common fault on the series 1's) they wouldve fixed it for free but i never got around to posting them... think i still have them somewhere. lol.
be worth looking into cos even if you upgrade you can ebay the reco'd ones.
Nah they weren't XFX, they were 6600GTs of some description, I think Gigabyte (convection cooled) but definitely not XFX. Replacing them with a cheapie pair of 7600GTs, should be a little better.
