Another vote for avg, used it for years without a drama

I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, I have read numerous reports and experienced it first hand where AVG is next to useless but at the end of the day it usually comes back to personal preference.
I just switched from Mcafee to norton, Mcafee imo is shit and doesn't protect your computer so I thought I would give norton a shot. Come time to renew it again I think i'll use avg.

i use avast pro. It's great. I moved away from Norton ages ago as it slows down your computer big time and takes ages to install. Avast installs in less than a minute.
NOD32 is supposed to be excellent as well.

I know this is a thread dig, but i am switching from trend micro to a free antivirus. I did a search and found this thread. I installed on a fresh install of xp pro that was still at service pack 1 and it caused the comp once turned off to go into a continual loop once re boooted that didnt go to the welcome screen and then re-start. I ended up formatting and re-installing windows. I then got all the latest updates and install avast again. It is now working good.
Now i have loaded it onto my new comp and it has the latest updates but avast has caused the same problem.
Is there any way i can get rid of it or fix the problem without formatting? I have some files i dont want to lose, i would slave its drive and put another drive in to load windows on but i dont have one here atm and i dont want to buy another(none of my mates have any sata drives spare).
Cheers Shane

Load into safe mode (press F8 before the windows screen during boot) and disable/remove it.
I aim to misbehave.
AVG and Avast! are the two best free anti-virus programs around.
Avast! is better though.
thanks lien, i managed to get it uninstalled. will go avg free on this comp as well.

AVG Used to be a very slow and taxing program to run. In recent times, they have stripped the program into many little programs so when your running something like a link scanner, it doesn't dump the whole program from page into ram, just the one little program (works much like SVCHOST). Now the Paid version of AVG is a little bit better then the Paid version of Avast, but when it comes down the free ones, you are going to be better off with Avast free, as it will do more (Including post boot scans which can be very usless for removing nasties), and handles root kits relativly well (Still not good enough, but better then AVG). Free-AV is another decent one you might want to check out.
At the end of the day the user decides which is he best AV. And this really comes down to what the user is doing on the net. Most times one program wont rid all viruses, and you will have to use multi. Find a program you like, stick with it. But once a month it might be worth it to disable it, install another, run the scan, and then uninstall it.
However remember: The best Anti Virus is a light left click. If you know what you are doing, you can avoid viruses.
For my customers, I resell AVG Internet Security licences, however if they want a free AV, I install Avast (Voted time and time again as the best Anti Virus in the world)
