    Default Router help

    having trouble with my router.

    it's a D-link DSL-504G

was working fine this morning. this arvo, no ADSL connection. i can log onto the router but non of the fuctions are working on the screen. have reset multiple times with no luck. then suddenly it's re-connected itself but i don't know how/why.

    software or hardware problem?

    cheers

Could be an issue with your provider?

Although if not, most definately the router.

    +1 ISP.

if you could log on to the routers http address and not the net i would say its the ISP. otherwise the modem may be playing up.

does it have a reset to factory settings on the back of the router?

In theory if you perform a factory reset it should remove your usename and password.

So at a guess you have an issue with your modem which you may be able to resolve if you perform a firmware upgrade. You should be able to local the firmware from dlink's website.

Failing this, it could be as simple as setting up a static IP address rather than using DHCP or even consider disable any anti-virus software, anti-spyware or firewall software on the PC and see if the admin function will then work. For saftey you may wish to disconnect the phone cord from the modem to ensure your PC is not connected to the internet without this software running.

Have you tried the default admin username and password?

If that doesn't work I'd try disabling the a/v, spyware and firewall software and configure a static IP address. Now if that doesn't fix it and it was mine and I would give it the boot... just to make me feel better

Doesnt sound like the router stuffing up to me, either ISP or just dodgy DSL connection or something.. Is the plug loose in the wall or dodgy cable or soemthing?

Computer Technician here.. If you can access the routers web interface, but cannot click around and do things like look at other pages in the router, then the router is faulty.

Sometimes good routers can freeze and after you reset them they run for years more, but since you said that you reset multiple times and it didn't change, then it suddenly worked, I suspect the router is on its way out.

Others have said that its possibly an ISP issue but since you could not access certain pages of your own router, which you should be able to even if the phone line/coax is unplugged, it further confirms it the router.

how long have you left it off for? turn it off and let it cool down for an hour or 2, then try again.

lol, wtf has it got to do with the ISP? Do you ring your ISP when your computer stuffs up? If you can't reset it to factory default settings, then obviously it is a router problem.

i left if off for a couple Hr's yesterday (it was bloody hot), after that i plugged it in and left it, eventually i got a connection back (approx 1.5hrs after pluggin in)

so currently i have a connection, i can log into the admin page of the router but can't access any of the function pages.

as much as i'd like to blame the ISP (and telecom does suc ass big time here in NZ) in this case it does look like the router is fried.

good excuse to get a new router with wireless me thinks

have you tried a different web browser to access the router?

If IE works its possible the webmin was created by a retarded web developer who doesn't know anything about cross browser compatibility. Though, Chrome was most likely made long after the webmin for your router was coded.

If it constantly works in IE then its most likely a design issue.
