    Default internet USAGE!

so, i have Bigpond standard cable 10gig a month for 59.95$. I think the speed for standard is like 8mbps or something. But every month i seem to chew through my usage within a few weeks and am left with slow as dog shit internet until it clicks over again. I have no idea how i could use 10gig in that amount of time!?! yeh i download movies etc but theres no way i could use 10gig. Is there anything on the net that chews it up quickly that i may be doing? do torrents chew through them?

I am thinking of upgrading to the Bigpond 25gig per month plan with 30mbps speed (the best and fastest they could offer) for 89.95 a month. according to them theres no "unlimited" download option?

What plans do you guys have? Is Bigpond a rip off? cheers.

The 10 gig is both uploads and downloads.

And yes torrents chew through it if your uploading at speed aswell.

Is bigpond a ripoff? hmmmm.... Not really. their just pricks to deal with.

    I would switch ISP's entirely.

Im maying 60 month for dsl2 with unlimited up and down data(friends in high places ). $60 month on dsl2 will get you 150gig plans no worries at all.

I use 10 gig on a daily basis lol. Yes, bigpond is a ripoff.

    easy
downloading-is everything you look at on the net(even this page) plus any files that you download.
uploading-anything you share with some one. ie. when downloading you often share back what you have already downloaded-that is called uploading.
often plans come with 2 speeds one is downloading and the other is uploading.
plans differ, some will have unlimited or unmetered uploading but a lot count uploading towards your plan limit.

I'd say it's from your uploading while your downloading your movies.... Whats your upload speed set 2? I leave mine capped at 5kbs upload until the end of the month to get my ratio back.

Also you can go onto bigpond.com and look at mybigpond and look at your actually daily breakdown usage.

I was on bigpond for years but I made the move _finally_ to exetel a couple months ago and it rocks! cheaper and better. I've got 60 gig peak and 85 gig off peak for 59 bucks a month or something like this. It's a top notch isp but you have to do the setup yourself etc (but it's easy). Once you join up you can choose alot of stuff in the members section like buying domain and hosting (really good deals) and choose which wildlife charity to send your 5 bucks a month to which they believe in being a company that uses Earth resources rather than the profits going to shareholders and such. All around they are spot on

P.S I was on the bigpond 25 gig plan before I used to get capped most months, exetel unlike bigpond don't count upload data and now even trying pretty hard I could only use 30 gig peak and 30 gig off peak and that was downloading a lot of crap I didn't even need or want. Actually is $65 a month plan TL-C3

    http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_new.php

But TL-C2 is the one you want, $55

The off peak allowance is worked out each month depending on what they think is "fair" depending on how busy the cables are etc but at the moment it's 85 gig

If you are lucky enough to be one of the lucky few that have an adsl2 exchange you can get one of these

My parents have Aussie Broadband wireless out of Warrnambool and it's actually quite alot slower than a 56k modem during peak hours. It starts getting slower at lunch time, by the night it's unusable. I think the link from Portland to Warrnambool is the problem but seriously considering the money the government give them for line upgrages with each install 2 grand +. It's the biggest scam I've ever seen!. They had 3g before and it was OK much better then the current one but more costly also

I go through 10 gig a month just using the PS3 online. That's through Bigpond and haven't had a big issue with speed.

yeh alot of smaller ISP's have better deals etc but my friends have had bad experiences.. e.g NETSPACE has a deal for super fast internet with 150gig per month yeh all go's well but once your internet stops working they take 10 years to fix it!!! i wont even start with DODO lol that just looks dodgey from the commercials. Hence the reason why i am with Bigpond, because when i do have trouble with my internet not working they have spot on support.

alrthough i am going to investigate exetel. cheers foam!

Exetel is full of win really, and the contract is only 30 days. I don't think I'll be changing isp

    Whirlpool Broadband News

Whirlpool have a comprehensive ISP plan search engine and their forums are the best source for finding out about public opinions on isps (good/bad/etc) and also for resolving isp issues as most isps have reps that frequent the forums as well.

Try turning your auto windows updates off and norton or what ever updates off they will still come up on the screen but you can choose when and if to download you will probably find they are chewing up your internet

I only have 1.5mb here since there's no adsl2 exchange here, in theory exetel should be the same speed as bigpond since I'm on the same lines for much of the way but in practice its faster than bigpond, it's also not droped out for even one second yet and bigpond were often reseting servers in the middle of the night or whatever they do for 15 minutes or so. I was happy with bigpond but in the end the price I was paying for the data I had compared to the price I should be paying was just too much difference and I couldn't do it anymore. When I called to quit it they asked me what deal I was on and I told them and they just said wow... we can't come close to matching that are you sure that's right? so they had no offer for me. I was also getting tired of their not looking after people in remote areas, it doesn't affect me since I happen to live close to an exchange but most people around here don't and there's nothing much being done about it so I rather not have my money go to people that don't care.

I can see usage graphs inside the exetel members area for all the links they use, none of them run flat out at anytime during the day, they get close at peak times but apart from that there's plenty spare so speed should allways be good. Anyway you can go with the bigpond plan, nothing wrong with them if you have the money to spare and don't mind the limited data but the cost and getting capped really anoyed me at times

    *wipes away tears of laughter*

Hellstra - wouldn't use them if they were the only ISP left in the world.

    Im with internode.
    1500/256 with 50GB Down/Up
Only 49.95 a month. Best around for my area. Bigpond wanted 59$ for 512 and 5GB. What a Joke.

Its a given i'll post just after clair lol

Ditch telstra as soon as you can. If you can't be ****ed sifting through all the crap on whirlpool (i know i cant sometimes) the big 3 (not counting the crap 2) are AAPT, Primus, and Adam (and if were talking high usage, add TPG in, but shit service/support)

AAPT just made an unlimited plan (no caps, and no limits) but not sure how long it will be around for, or if other companies will jump on that idea.
I'm with iPrimus, and the speeds are better/more reliable than when my parents had telstra cable. So much so, they cancelled their cable, and now use my internet lol
