Apple has now decided to sue HTC over 20 odd patent infringements.
One of them being 'document rotate'...
Apple Sues Android Phone Maker - Gear News at IGN
I think apple needs to get a life and stop trying to sue everyone for everything.
Palm, HTC, Nokia, Some random school, Woolies have all been targets of Apples stupid court cases.
Apple are just after maximum profit. There is like 80% mark-up on Ipods and probably the same on Iphones. One would think they have more then enough.
i wish apple would cease to exist, that way everyone would learn how to operate a PC rather than throw their hands up in the air and say "i give up, i would much rather be a follower of trends than a maintainer my own computer"
or words to that effect.
Seriously how does this effect any of you?
Im quite happy with my iPhone apple created.
They have all rights to protect their stuff that they pay millions to patient pend.
The iPhone is a great device no doubt, but Apple are being douche's with all their patenting.
Only reason they are doing this is because they are clearly out of ideas on what to create next and are trying to stat ahead of the field but patenting everything under the sun.
If it was suing over an infringement of some revolutionary idea they had and someone stole is and is making a killing off it, then sure.
But they are patented ideas and technology that have been around for ages and no one patented them before because it was pretty much given advances on this technology path.
It's like Converse or the like patenting shoelaces. Or whoever invented USB patenting that so noone else can use it. Completely retarded.
All apple is doing at the moment is alienating themselves from the rest of the technological word.
They are loving life at the moment with all their little law suits, but down the track it will backfire when everyone has had enough of them and will stop producing software that supposes the Apple hardware and software platforms.
HTC should now team up with Palm and sue Apple over the use of touch screens just for a laugh, since Palm has a patent for that from back in the day, when they were exploring smartphone/pda technology, but not enough money to take on Apple.
Yeah point taken.
Though im pretty sure they have something up their sleeves.
Probebly doing it to scare microsoft because as we all know, microsoft steals ideas.
Apples just putting their foot down.
They cant sue over an idea but they can if it has something unique about it... like a usb stick with an apple icon as an example. If another company tries to print an apple on a usb stick ofcourse their looking for trouble.
Your right in a way.
There are two ways to go.
MS Chose to give choice to the people. Flood the market with compatible hardware and allow multiple vendors to produce it so you can sell your software to run on it. They got lucky. Becuse it was so easy to get into the PC market, manufactures produced all this MS compatable hardware and created this great market for MS products while keeping it affordable to everyone...
Apple, took the "protect your ass route". They made sure NO ONE could copy thier stuff so they had a technological advantage. It works for a period, no one can produce an iPod other than apple.. however, becuase they are so popular, companies are going to want to buy into that market. So cheap very-close rip offs come about that have 98% of the functionaly but half the price tag.
Apples creativity and popularity will only get them so far. They cant just keep slaping "i" on everything and expecting people to pay out their ass for it.
You cant patent everything, it works both ways. It protects IP but it also enables fair market share by not limiting technological growth (ballistics GUI is open to use for example).
Dont worry, apple will crumble (see what i did there?)... they are a cool fad at the moment
aZk.
I reckon whoever owns Commodores old stuff could do some old time sueing on Apple for a few things
Yep, that would be a clear trademark infringement and I wouldn't have an issue with that.
But what they are doing at the moment is plain market bullying.
Just causing problems for the sake of causing problems because the will lose 95% of these cases and gain nothing other than slowing the progress of thei competitors.
And causing the slowing of technological developments of their competitors is a lose/lose situation.
The consumer loses because they no longer get cool new shit and have companies constantly trying to out do each other.
And technological advances suffer in general.
Pointless and counter productive.
I forget what that movies called now...
Something to do with the bloke who invented the windscreen wiper and ford stole the idea. just called it a different name.
Same thing as whats happening. Apple invents new features and other companys steal the idea and slap their name on it.
Have you even seen some of the patents theyre trying to sue for?
- Unlocking by sliding. Have been told that microsoft did this first.
- Saving power by reducing voltage to CPU instructions. Laptops have done this for years, and Im sure plenty of phones have as well. Iphone fails at conserving power. Battery life is a joke.
It just seems that Apple have decided to patent every tiny function their iPhone performs, whether they invented it or not. It all seems like crap that other companies would not bother patenting, or didnt think about it because it was such a small function, and now that they have the patents, are going to abuse them.
Im sure you read this line the opposite that I do. I see the ford company in that story being Apple, and the windscreen wiper inventor being whatever company created the function/technology first.

Wouldn't say apple has 'invented' much lately. At most they have evolved ideas and features.
And definately not the stuff they are suing over.
I mean some of the patents they are suing over are a little silly.
The '849 Patent, entitled "Unlocking A Device By Performing Gestures On An Unlock Image,"
Well, yeah... that's a pretty logical thing to do. And they only patented this start of Feb this year, they they are suit HTC for using it in the Hero's, Magics, PRO TOUCH2, etc. All phones released before then. Most running Sense UI which has that feature.
The '076 Patent, entitled "Automated Response To And Sensing Of User Activity In Portable Devices,"
Err... portable devices would be pretty useless if they didn't response to user activity...? How can that even be patented? That's like patenting Device turning on when user activates power button
The '599 Patent, entitled "Object-Oriented Graphic System,"
And thats REALLY stupid, based on that, they could sue ANYONE who has graphic's that a user can interact with. Really?
If apple discovered that drawing a start with your finger on a touch screen was the best way to activate say your contacts, and then HTC copied that. Then obviously that would be clearly wrong.
But they stuff they are suing over, it's basically logical ideas and features that no-one before then patented because they were so logical.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this unravels. One way or another, Apple wins over HTC because this sort of thing ties up resources and halts the development of new technologies.
But in the end, we all lose.

I don't own any either.
I see Apple products as devices for people who are draw to fancy colors and lots of pictures. Basically devices for people who are too retarded to use real devices.

Neither do I. I owned an iPod, when the battery ran out I was told I had to send it to America to be replaced at some insane price. First and Last thing I ever owned made by Apple.
I much prefer being able to drive 5 minutes down the road to pick up a peice for my PC i can change myself, than to either a) by a completely new system or b) send my Mac to the US.
