Hi all, i went from telstra bigpond cable to TPG ADSL2+.
Whilst speaking on the phone to the TPG sales rep, she was telling me it was as fast if not faster than any cable. I then ask her if it is all wireless, she says yes there are no cords. I say excellent, thats the reason i want it, ill take it. She says ok your account will be active in 4 days (thats when i start to pay etc) About 5 days later i recieve the modem and go to set it up. I open the box and find a modem with about 4 cables, one for the phone line, one ethernet cable, one power cord and a USB cord. The reason i purchased TPG was 1. for the price 2. because it was meant to be wireless.
I call them back and ask why i have a modem with cords when its suppose to be completely wireless? They then say the modem i have isn't wireless and that i should purchase the one that is completely wireless (first modem $69.95, second $149.95). I said ok can i send back the first one and get a complete refund as its your fault. They said thats fine. I said ok im not paying for postage either why should i have to? they said no worries we will send you a post pack with the new modem.
I recieve the new modem, but no post pack. I thought stuff it ill just pay for a post bag. Got home and went to open the new modem to see it has 2 cords. One for the power which was expected and one for a phone line. I call them back and im pretty angry. I stay calm and ask why they sent me a modem with cords again? They say ADSL2+ has to be connected to a phone line, i say why did you guys tell me time after time it was COMPLETELY wireless? they said "No sir we wouldn't have said that". I no it should have been obvious to had to be connected to something but how was i meant to know? i was totally new to ADSL.
At this point in time i said ok so all i do is plug the modem into a phone line (far away from desktop) and turn it on? He said " yes sir, now are you using a laptop or desktop?" i said desktop, he says oh ok, well if thats the case you need to purchase a USB wireless adapter from us (49.95)and also run an ethernet cable from your computer to the modem to recognise the connection.
At this point in time i was FUMING. I said to him you guys have stuffed me around for atleast two weeks now!? im half way through the first month of my plan and havn't even got on the net because of your stupid mistakes i want to speak to the person in charge. So he puts me onto his "supervisor". She says sorry blah blah blah but i still have to pay for this adapter and do the cord thing. I ask her why would her sales people tell me its completely wireless!? she says they wouldn't... so i thought stuff this i want to cancel my account
Told her i wanted to cancel my account and she says its a $350 cancellation fee. I said no im not paying that you guys have stuffed me around for atleast two weeks and i havent even used your internet yet! She says you have to pay sir blah blah blah. I said put me onto your boss she says i will organise for my boss to call you on tuesday.
WTFFFFFFFf yeh thats my rant god damn never go with TPG. There so STUPID

Sounds like they aren't the stupid ones, you are....
Are you mentally retarded?
How do you expect a net connection with no phone line on dsl2?
TPG are not stupid, the end user is...

i was thinking the same thing as minux, but yeah can't expect everyone to understand how it works if they've never dealt with it before.
i guess it's not your fault that you don't understand how adsl2 and wireless works. if i was you i would have done some research first, but you trusted the people on the phone and obviously you understood incorrectly. i think what's happened here is that TPG assumed that you would have known that adsl2 runs through the phone line, and that any device that wants to connect to a wireless router must have a wireless adapter (this is common knowledge to most people). the first modem was wrong to begin with - but the second modem was correct if they made that assumption.
but if you really want to complain go post on whirlpool instead. there are TPG reps there that might respond to your issue.
It allows wireless connections to it (laptops, desktops, gaming consoles, mobiles etc), but it still has to be physically connected to the ADSL line....
You really should do some research before signing any sort of contract. :P
From my knowledge i thought ADSL 2+ was totally wireless. When they said yes its totally wireless sir that just confirmed my belief. How can a company expect people to know adsl2 requires a phone line? What if some old lady called that was totally illiterate at computers.. and why didnt they ask me if i was using a desktop or laptop to see if i needed this adapter thing.

i know i should have researched but by calling them thats researching :S ah well

Dont worry ... it's quite common for wireless to be confused with mobile broadband ... they both sound similar right?
If computers have no doors or fences, who needs Windows and Gates?
Um, NO, ADSL is not wireless, for that you need a wireless usb dongle, here is some info on ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You asked for wireless you did get it, the modem would have a wireless connection available to get to the net through the modem, hence the confusion.

Yeahhh, Companies are Bastards like that, It's all about the Cashola. i used to be with TPG, and their internet is good, I was happy with it. But.. Their customer service is not what it could be.. Also, On ADSL your Download speed will be quick, but your Upload speed (attaching pics or vids to emails, sending somebody videos, large files) Will be pretty damn slow, As opposed to broadband with has the same upload and download speed. (not sure if you knew that or not. Just giving you the heads up just in case).
tpg have a faq on their website and it clearly shows that you need a phone line: ADSL Internet Broadband ISP - ADSL2 ADSL2+ Naked DSL Mobile VoIP
the term "completely wireless" in regards to adsl2 means a modem that is connected to the phone line, and power, that doesn't have any ethernet ports.
like i said before, if you really want to complain about their services go complain on whirlpool but prepare yourself for the abuse.
I am so tempted to post this on whirlpool myself.
Just need time to pick myself up off the floor from laughter lol.

I lol'd thanks.
for the people that are laughing at me and saying im stupid get a life. So what if i didnt know adsl 2+ needed a phone line? thats why i called and asked if it was totally wireless!? with the answer being yes! wtf was i suppose to think?
Of course people on a internet site will think im stupid for not knowing because they are total geeks at it (no offence).

Great, but you still need to get an internet plan I assume? I'm with TPG, they are amongst the best on the market for value for money ADSL2 plans. If you want a truly wireless internet plan, your only option is a mobile broadband plan, or Unwired - both of which are extremely slow by comparison, and you'll pay out the arse for. There is a very hefty premium you pay for wireless data, and if you don't actually need it you'd be crazy to buy it.
Is there a particular reason you can't stand having two wires going into your modem? Unless there is I would still be looking at a ADSL2 plan with a wireless modem (ie, it has power and the phone/data line, then wireless to your computer(s)).

So if you are after customer service and wish to avoid headaches maybe think twice.

Seriously? Even after having it pointed out to you that you should be researching before agreeing to a contract, it's still theri fault that you dodn't know what you're doing? You say ringing them was research, no it wasn't. Ringing a provider whose sole purpose is to make money off you is not research. If I worked there, I would do everything in my power to make sure you paid the fees that you incurred through your own lack of research. You are coming across as what's known as an 'entitlement whore'.
wireless is wireless. wireless meaning NO CORDS. the modem had cords, they said it was wireless. do you not understand?
