    Data recoverable - Yes
Funny enough this is all to common with Laptops, though I think I have seen more fist size cracks through screens then HDD problems from hits lol.
It is possible its an easy fix such as the cable has worked lose from the hit, or worse case it was spinning and it is now pretty stuffed.
Data will be recoverable, but depending on what damage is done will depend on how much it costs. When I use to do Data recovery it was $110 an hour, regardless of recovering data.

what are the symptoms to make you think you have killedo t.

it makes a tick sound when trying to boot up, like the sound of a pingpong ball sorta. as if it is trying to spin(guessing) and it cant boot up because it cant find the hdd.

Without seeing it, I would say there is a 50-50 of retrieving the data cheapily and easily.
What sort of laptop is it?
Try reseating the hard drive before taking it to anyone if you know how. Ticking noise could be a fan, and hard drive dislodged, unlikely but possible.

all depending on how bad you want the data, there are a couple of methods that can give you just enough time to pull data off. plugging it in via usb on another pc often is the best way rather than letting it boot from it.

if worst comes to worst and you get a new hard drive and need the data on there you can download a linux boot cd, Search on google "Hirens bootCD" download the latest version, pop it in your cd drive and boot from the cd.

you then select Mini Windows XP and it will load up windows xp from the cd, and then you can just browse through your hard drive, there are also various Hard drive recovery tools on the boot CD that are all listed.

a couple of ways of getting data off it.
Get an external USB Enclosure. Install it in that then get a program called "GetDataBack NTFS" Install the program on another computer and then plug the drive USB drive in. Hopefully the program should be able to pickup the drive and start reading it. Another thing you can try is Wrap it in several layers of Cling Wrap. Make sure it is wrapped tightly and is completely sealled. Put it in the freezer for several hours then try using it.
