Hi all, over the past few months i have been wanting to upgrade my adsl speed. I am currently on 1500/256(kbps?). I am currently with people telecom.
Yesterday i found out that telstra have some new plans.
I am looking at the 50 gig adsl2 plan here BigPond Broadband internet - Compare broadband plans and broadband speed I am unable to get cable.
Since people telecom use telstra infrastucture anyway i dont see the quality of service being an issue. I have only had one dropout in about 5 years.
I am getting confused with the speed rates. As above i am currently on 1500/256 and that is adsl 1.
Now that quoted speed is 20/1 Mbps. I dont know how much faster that is compared to what i have now.
Does 20/1 translate to 2000/1000 or does it translate to something else?
Cheers Shane

1024kb to 1mb
Internet speed relates ti bits, not bytes, there is 8bits in a a byte, but you dont need to know that.
In perpective, your current connection is 1,500kbps, on adsl2 it ould now be 20,000kbps, so just over 13 times faster in theory.
Actual speed depends on Distance from exchange and quality of lines. ADSL2 will lose more speed over a distance then adsl1 but it starts out a shit load faster and is nothing to worry about.
You cant wrong with going from ADSl1 to ADSL2 unless your moderm doesnt support ADSl2 in which case you need a new moderm to get full benefits
Just one thing too add, Telstra include uploads into their plans. 50gig is bugger all.

Not any more they don't. 200Gb for less than $100 with Bigpond at the moment. Bigpond currently have some of the best value for money plans available.
Counting uploads isn't a huge deal either. Unless you're seeding torrents, uploads usually sit at around 6% of total usage.
I'm on a 50Gb plan that counts uploads and it's fine for me. It may be bugger all for some but it depends on your usage - what suits one person doesn't suit everyone. What's a lot to someone is bugger all to others. Before I moved back to Internode I was on a 35Gb plan that didn't count uploads and even that was fine for me.
People that download a LOT will want more though. I just download some TV shows, the Formula 1 qualifying and races and the odd movie.
thanks for the replys.
i am still looking, but i thought this is a better deal than what i currently have (1500/256 49.95/month).
still going to look and work out if the bundling that needs to go with it is worth the hassle.
i am currently paying 49.95/month and have the house phone bundled, so i will keep checking it out before i make a decision.
thanks minux, i didnt realise that.
cheers shane
