Default LAN only working after a PC restart

Ok... Finally fixed my issue with my Xbox getting onto Live. Now it seems I have a totally different issue.

It seems the Xbox only wants to connect to my LAN (through Internet Connection Sharing) after my PC has been restarted. AFAIK ive enabled it so that if my PC is in standbye or inactive, the Xbox will wake it up. The problem is rarely is it an issue of my PC being inactive, as soon as I turn the xbox off I wont be able to reconnect it.

stop being a cheapskate and just buy a switch! seriously its less than 50bucks....see

CentreCom - Cheap Notebooks & Computers

try one of them out.....should solve your dramas and means that you can add other devices later on if need be!

    or something like this
CentreCom - Cheap Notebooks & Computers

allows you to add wireless devices later on....

The computer is not old at all. It has two network cards. One is inbuilt so its a nvidea card and the other I recently purchased specifically for ICS because the switch didnt work which is a Realtek card.

Ive used the modem as a USB modem for as long as I can remember. Ive uninstalled the USB drivers and gone through the software steps to enable Ethernet but it doesnt want to work - thats on both Ethernet connections. So i dunno if its a case of the Modem being a pain in my ass or the PC doing something ####ing stupid. Im going to say its my PC because my old computer (same modem) had no issues whatsoever with ICS.

At the moment my work around is restarting my PC everytime I want to play on XBox live - which after 1 day is getting tiresome.

    edit

Ive just been told that I need a router, and it wont work on a switch because its a cable modem *shrug*

So the modem is not ADSL?

Are there network ports on the back or is it USB only

Its a Cable modem. I run Optus Cable.

There is a Ethernet port on the back as well as a USB. When I connect it, it...kinda recognises it, it says there is limited or no connectivity - aka shit doesnt work.

well by rights a router without a modem should solve your issue, because you have the cable modem, a router can then deal with the connection to the modem and the router can therefore deal with the IP addressing for its own network......that should work...theoretically anyway! try that Linksys wireless router or something similar if you are willing to spend some money, or find a mate who has one that you can steal for an afternoon!

When you use the ethernet ports, you would have to set ip addresses on the port on the modem and the port on ya comp, can you get to those settings on the modem using the USB connection via a management page?

when it is saying that it means that the optus cable modem is not assigning the IP addresses, it is not becoming the DHCP server to auto assign the IP addresses, if you can create a static route between the modem and a switch that is running the PC and XBOX, if you want to have the network running as it should (using IP addressing!) that should work, the reason its not working is because you have all the data travelling out the USB on the modem, by getting rid of that you should end up with a more stable (speed and uptime) connection because you are using the correct format of cable for a network!!! oh it might also work if you get a PS3!!

I am pretty sure this modem does NOT have routing functionality, therefore he will not be able to do as you stated.

Have you tried connecting the Xbox directly to the modem?

If that works, then connect the PC via USB, and xbox via ethernet.

it shouldnt matter, due to the fact that the modem will only be having to assign an address to itself and the other end it shouldnt make a difference, the same thing would happen when the PC is connected to it......the point of a router is to create a separate broadcast domain, effectively the modem connection to the router is one broadcast domain and the network that is running out of the router is another broadcast domain, so the modem only has to deal with itself and getting data to the other connection beyond which it doesnt need to know! all you have to do is set up a default static route so that all information that is no destined for the routers direct network is set towards the other end connection which is the modem and then the modem deals with all the data packets from there on......bahhh sorry i stated switch, not router........a switch cannot define a DHCP your correct!! but a router can!!
