AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 125W Processor Review - PCSTATS.com
This is the processor I have suggested in the build.
Look at the stats. It beats out everything within its price range and is slightly lagging behind the Intel i7 which is in the 300 dollar + range and the i5 which is $75 - 100 more.
Bang for buck they are fantastic. Sure not the best. But for a 150-160 dollar processor, you cannot complain.
Hama, I believe the build I suggested is great for you price range. It will stomp anything you want to do, and comes within your price range. 4 gig of ram will be great with a better video card than the stardard build. My only concern would be the PSU, If you wanted to upgrade in the future (depending on what comes with the case) it would need to be upgraded.
Its about application not cost of parts, you wouldnt buy a super computer to do basic calculations that could be performed by a pocket calculator.....
Whilst buying the latest greatest is a good way of future proofing, the best thing is to buy an item that is good but cheap allowing for greater financial flexibility when new technology comes out. Because technology is being updated at such a quick rate "buy the best buy once" doesnt really work as by the time you purchase the latest greatest graphics card a newer more powerful unit is released outdating yours......
Look at it this way, a good car becomes a classic, a good computer becomes a paperweight.....
I have a 3 year old computer now. Cost me around $4,000 ($1000 just for the graphics card) at the time but runs EVERY game I have (and I have a lot, as well as most popular new releases - gotta love Steam) at 1920x1200 with full graphics without lag. So while I see the validity to your argument, I'm an advocate of spending once and waiting a decent period of time rather than having the hassle of continually upgrading individual components.
That same $4000 computer would probably cost $500 to build now.
4 years is a millennia in the technology world.
What are the specs of that machine?
Because you can't just say it runs all the games you have and expect us to go "oh okay it must be good". Not having a dig, but you know what I mean?
doubt it... But I could be wrong and I cbf looking into it! lol
This is from a post back in October 2008 and checking back through my online order history I built it in August/September 2008 so I was wrong when I said 3 years. But it's older than 2 years now.

Look for something that will last you at least the next 2 years. so you are gonna spend over 1k.
Depending on what you will be using it for.. keep its specs within reason and allow for upgrades.
So start off with a decent mobo, that way you can upgrade the rest without hassle. i suggest the LGA1336 socket. Currently intel is leading the market in CPUs, and they arent gonna stop anytime soon. AMD has slackened off a bit and focused on their ATI branch.. and it has paid off big time.'
Get a nice decent PSU aswell, 700W is fine anything more is kinda overkill if you aint gonna go with multiple GFX cards.
for an OS drive id get a Seagate Momentus XT, its only a 2.5" drive.. but it performs well, it essentially has a 4gb cache. and yes it works my load times are alot quicker that a standard drive and against a velociraptor it still wins.
DDR3 ram either dual or triple channel is fine. something above 1600Mhz is decent.
GFX i suggest ATI of somesort. Nvidia's cards arent performing like they used to, they have put too much effort into 3D in my opinion.
Meh PSU's are a part you may as well future proof.
I wanted a PSU that could handle ANYTHING I threw at it... They're cheap as chips anyway so why not get one with huge capacity but only draws what it needs when it needs it?
true that, indeed you did that with a silverstone, top choice my friend...
Well I'm ordering the AMD package that Gren suggested.
AMD Quad Core 965 3.4Ghz
$490
+$110 (Win 7)
+$185 (23" LG HD Monitor)
+$60 (4GB Ram)
+$17 (Wireless Network Card)
- $30 (Inbuilt Speaker)
$832
nice, gdluck m8, so you putting it together yourself?
Nah what he is ordering is one of the "packages" that MSY does and they chuck it together for you.
Hama are you also going to upgrade the video card? Theyve got 2 options there that are pretty reasonable, either for 5570 for 60 or the 5670 for 80.
