    Hey Mate.
Open iPhoto. Plug in a Fat32 Formatted drive and copy all the photos to the external drive, then plug your drive into your PC & copy the photos back.

Use a brick... that will fix it permanently.

Seriously if the Hard disk is making any sounds it's more than likely stuffed and your chances of recovering stuff off it is going to be unlikely.

There are 3rd party tools that could help, I tend to use Hiren's Boot CD but that's for Intel and Windows/Linux/Dos based systems and never used it on Apple(Could work???##@!#!?). Whats even more of a problem is there is not alot out there for Apple based(osX) recover tools... well not unless you pay someone to get the files off the hard disk.

Data Rescue, Copycat X (Best for bad sectors on a drive since it skips to continue recovery) Disk worrier for disk repair.
Techtool / Pro for drive testing and disk repairs also.
Not "free" but im sure theres plenty online ;-)

Photorec and Teskdisk are a package which runs on any OS. I use them in a production environment all the time for in-the-fly recovery. They have never let me down and are free.

My advice would be try the old fashioned way first, just copy all the photos out of I-Photo. I've heard horror stories about disk recovery software making things worse...
