I read in Windows Magazine that a guy noticed his laptop was showing some fluff, so he decided to take the backing case off and clean the fan. Now I don't know how many people here have ever attempted to take a laptop apart, but if you have, you'll know it's really, really annoying. Now, I never use my laptop on carpets, or my lap, or beds or anywhere than isn't a solid surface where the fans have ample breathing space, but apparently neither did the guy from the mag, and his was covered in fluff etc.
So, is it really worth the hassle cleaning your laptop fan by removing the back etc, or is there an easier way or anything? I know a vaccuum would be good but they just aren't too powerful, & someone mentioned compressed air, but that sounds a bit dodgy & it would just blow the fluff inside the lappy, causing more trouble?
Cheers guys!

yeah its recommended as a fan thats not working well will allow your heatsink and cpu to cook
if the machine is used regularly, and is at least a couple of years old its definitely worth your while doing it yourself, or taking it to someone else who can. At the same time its also wise to renew the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink, as manufacturers will often use the cheapest they can.
I remember about a year ago I had someone's 6 year old Asus at my place getting a reinstall. While I had it I figured I may as well open it and clean the heatsink/fan assembly. After cleaning out the 6 years worth of dust it went from being as loud as a 747 taking off to being as quiet as a cat burglar, not to mention it also ran much, much, much cooler than it did before cleaning it.

I just hte taking laptops/pc's to a shop where they charge $50 to do something I could do at home. I'm pretty tech savvy, I took my old laptop apart when the gfx card fried, and put it back together again so I could probably pull off cleaning a fan myself.
Also yeah I want to renew the paste with I think it's called Arctic Silver or something? I used it on my ps3 when I had the YLOD & it works a charm, I love the stuff!
Have you ever had trouble with the compressed air method?

Exactly, not to mention that if the machine is only a few months old, it most likely won't really need it anyway. As I said its not really until the machine is a couple of years old that it really needs to be done.

Just make sure you stop the fan, have replaced a few fans from people just blowing them out and letting the fan spin at a gazillion RPM and it breaks/noisey afterwards.
So SO WORTH IT.
Don't do it ALL the time, but it's something you should do every 6 months or so I have found.
The laptops run cooler, and because they run cooler, they run faster and quieter. It's absolutely worth doing.
