Hellooooo everyone,
Last night got home (my computer has been playing up a little for a few days) and my internet connection to the computer is not working (my xbox live is so it can't be the internet itself).
Ok so the first thing i did was a system restore that achieved nothing so i put it back to where it was. Now i done all of the simple stuff, reset everything check the cables are fine and what not, This also achieved nothing.
I started going through the windows trouble shooter starting from the top, Disconnecting/reconnecting everything but nothing seems to work. I got upto the run: command, /ipconfig and my IP address came up as 0.0.0.0 to start with is that normal? done the /ipconfig release, ipconfig renew. The ip release came up that it was already released and the ip renew came up that it is not possible.
now basically i want to know do i run it to a computer shop to get it fixed or is this something you guys can help me with. I was playing with it for around 5 hours yesterday (so im pretty over it!) Now, Where the plug goes into the back of the computer it is flashing (green) and that tells me that im getting connection through the cable, right? so there has to be something wrong with the computer itself?
Also, I am unable to do system recovery, it tells me that there are no files to recover (or something around those lines) and i dont have any of the discs that it came with. Have had the computer a while and i believe they got lost a while back when moving!
Can someone please let me know what to do, I dont want to take it down to the local computer guy if i can fix it myself!
I'm clearly pretty basic on a computer so ANY help would be great!
Thanks for looking and thanks in advance!
Cheers, Mick. (on the work computer)
I have given as much info as i can (remember).
Edit: forgot to add, I ran:
AVG: no resluts founds
Ad-aware: 6 threats (removed all)
and have no current fire wall set up.
bumping it up, If no answers ill take it down the shop S'arvo
fire up your command prompt again (where you ran your ipconfig commands) and run this command:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Post the results of the resetlog.txt here.
The command will reset your TCP/IP stack.

ill duck home at lunch and give it a go and let you know what i get.. Cheers mate!
So that will be a possible fix? or just maybe tell me the problem.

No problem! Tech shops can charge like wounded bulls so it is better to get free advice first!
It definitely sounds like your PC is having trouble getting an IP address from your modem.

Yeah i know they do!
Well if it helps over the last few days it been not loading certain pages (google, ebay, etc.) but sites like justcommodores.com and facebook have been fine. Than just yesterday it shit itself completely!
Also, The 2 internet things (2 computers that pop up bottom right corner) the 1394 connection and the high-speed connection are both disabled not and 'fail to connect' whenever i try now.+
hmm ok, if you right click on High Speed connection can you select enable?
It sound strange why some sites were working and others did not.
Can you paste the results of the ip reset command i got you to run?
Also, open the following file with notepad:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
and paste the contents here

when you select enable it comes up connecting, then connection failed and does nothing!
Also i have had something about system32 comes up as an error everytime i boot the computer up, but that has been happening for months.
the system32 errors can mean all sorts of things, we can sort that one out later.
what is the make and model of your computer?

On my way home now! ill get back to you with these things!
Thanks alot for your time Jaymz
uh the ####ing thing is working :S the first thing you sent me to do in the command wont work? it comes up with nothing when i type
netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.txt
and typing in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts to open in wordpad (file does not exist).
is it possible that the first thing fixed it?
Or what the #### is going on? afraid to turn the computer off now it may #### out!
hmm and hmm. What version of windows are you using?
Try use notepad instead to open the file. if you navigate to that folder and open the file with notepad (double click on the file and it should ask what program you want to use to open the file)
The other option is for me to take control of your computer remotely and have a look into it for you. <- that is completely optional though, privacy stuff and all that. Only if you are ok with me taking over your computer.

windows XP,
Computer is a HP (ill get you numbers later gotta get back to work)
This came up:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample LMHOSTS file used by the Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to computernames
# (NetBIOS) names. Each entry should be kept on an individual line.
# The IP address should be placed in the first column followed by the
# corresponding computername. The address and the computername
# should be separated by at least one space or tab. The "#" character
# is generally used to denote the start of a comment (see the exceptions
# below).
#
# This file is compatible with Microsoft LAN Manager 2.x TCP/IP lmhosts
# files and offers the following extensions:
#
# #PRE
# #DOM:<domain>
# #INCLUDE <filename>
# #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
# #END_ALTERNATE
# \0xnn (non-printing character support)
#
# Following any entry in the file with the characters "#PRE" will cause
# the entry to be preloaded into the name cache. By default, entries are
# not preloaded, but are parsed only after dynamic name resolution fails.
#
# Following an entry with the "#DOM:<domain>" tag will associate the
# entry with the domain specified by <domain>. This affects how the
# browser and logon services behave in TCP/IP environments. To preload
# the host name associated with #DOM entry, it is necessary to also add a
# #PRE to the line. The <domain> is always preloaded although it will not
# be shown when the name cache is viewed.
#
# Specifying "#INCLUDE <filename>" will force the RFC NetBIOS (NBT)
# software to seek the specified <filename> and parse it as if it were
# local. <filename> is generally a UNC-based name, allowing a
# centralized lmhosts file to be maintained on a server.
# It is ALWAYS necessary to provide a mapping for the IP address of the
# server prior to the #INCLUDE. This mapping must use the #PRE directive.
# In addtion the share "public" in the example below must be in the
# LanManServer list of "NullSessionShares" in order for client machines to
# be able to read the lmhosts file successfully. This key is under
# \machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmans erver\parameters\nullsessionshares
# in the registry. Simply add "public" to the list found there.
#
# The #BEGIN_ and #END_ALTERNATE keywords allow multiple #INCLUDE
# statements to be grouped together. Any single successful include
# will cause the group to succeed.
#
# Finally, non-printing characters can be embedded in mappings by
# first surrounding the NetBIOS name in quotations, then using the
# \0xnn notation to specify a hex value for a non-printing character.
#
# The following example illustrates all of these extensions:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino #PRE #DOM:networking #net group's DC
# 102.54.94.102 "appname \0x14" #special app server
# 102.54.94.123 popular #PRE #source server
# 102.54.94.117 localsrv #PRE #needed for the include
#
# #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
# #INCLUDE \\localsrv\public\lmhosts
# #INCLUDE \\rhino\public\lmhosts
# #END_ALTERNATE
#
# In the above example, the "appname" server contains a special
# character in its name, the "popular" and "localsrv" server names are
# preloaded, and the "rhino" server name is specified so it can be used
# to later #INCLUDE a centrally maintained lmhosts file if the "localsrv"
# system is unavailable.
#
# Note that the whole file is parsed including comments on each lookup,
# so keeping the number of comments to a minimum will improve performance.
# Therefore it is not advisable to simply add lmhosts file entries onto the
# end of this file.
would be happy for you to take over mate! you seem pretty genuine ill get back to you later!
The first fix/command that I got you to run would have reset all your network card back to factory standards. This process is a low level type reset which can sort a lot of problems. It should have fixed the issue, however without trying to replicate the problem (EG restart the pc) we wont know for sure.
You "should" be ok to restart your computer, but before you do you should try run the ipconfig command again and let me know what comes up.
Connecting up will be a last resort, some people can be funny about others looking at their computer so i have to make doubly sure you are ok with it. I will also show you how to disable the remote session and remove it once we are done.

sweet, so you are 2 hours behind me. that will mean it will be 5pm here when you finish at 3. Not a problem at all, can co-ordinate it through CB which will be easier. And if need be i can give you a call and talk you through some things.
And yup, i can look at any other issues that you have!
