ok so ive been looking elsewhere for solutions but nothing seems to match what is occuring.
firstly i need to do it wirelessly. unless you want to give me a 30-40m ethernet cable =P
so i can easily find the router (its a dlink model) (has no security, as we dont need it)
it normally has about 40-50% signal
and if i do the internet connection test maybe 75% of the time both ip adress and connection succeed.
however it says i need to do a system update. (4.00)
go to do that and it says no internet connection.
or it says updatte found, but it always comes up with no internet connection.
tried the solutions it suggests (turn off router, ps3 restart them etc) with no luck
ive read elsewhere about changing settings, static ip's and DMZ for the router.
is this recommended? (which ive read HERE
also we have another much much newer router at home, but we havent bothered to install it yet.
would this be a better idea?
Thanks
you could download the update off the sony site and install it via usb and then see if you can connect to the psn easily once you have updated before changing routers and numbers and that.
make sure u read the online instructions when downloading the update via the site, i dont knw the full process (havent done it for ages) but u will need to make a few new folders in the usb to save too
ok so updated via a USB device.
however back to internet problem.
nothing is working.
tried those instructions on the site.
onto to go and try to do the DMZ part on the computer to say its out of the range.
might try changing to inside that range i guess
otherwise i might just go connect new router up.
if not i guess it may mean finding a 40m ethernet cable =P
ok so just tried it again using auto settings. turned off media thing in internet settings.
kept DMZ thing on with router.
now lets hope it continues to work.
thanks for your help btw guys
ok so it connects to the internet, ps store etc.
go to play a game online.
requires updates...
go to do update.
starts with some number like 50 minutes
then jumps up and up and up and up and up to like 5000+ minutes.
anyone know any reason behind this.
did it time out at 0% by any chance?
also the update is only 52mb.
pretty much it says update available.
go to update screen. it starts.
stays on 0% and minutes just rise and rise.
and it times out.
also sent sony an email hopefully they can answer it.
but apparently there is something to do with firewall ports.
anyone have an info on this such as opening up certain ports for online play?
I had to adjust the settings on my router, as in the dmz you were talking about as i was having all sorts of problems. Once i put the ip address in for the ps3 i haven't had any more issues, almost 2 years now.
kept on trying and it starts. gets to like 5% or less and then it dies.
it then has some error code come up.
im about to just give up.
EDIT: currently at 25%
if this does update. all i an say is it is going to suck if i have to do the battlefield 3 update (which is 500+mb. this is only 52mb)
hmmm sounds more related to the router side of things , my mate had a old router that was shit house with his ps3 downloads took like 3 hours , online always dropping out and only gettting like 1 bar of wireless signal , changed/upgraded his plan they sent out a new router and then he was getting full speed downloads with the ps3 , playing online no lag and so on
fair enough trayner. i guess i might have to change over the router. (it is pretty old)
we have had a little trouble with it lately (randomly dropping the computer out. connects to router but for no reason internet drops. normally have to restart router, and then occasionally computer)
well good news it finally downloaded. 52mb took like 30minutes =P
now to do this battlefield 3 update. all 500mb+ of it.
Edit: make that 767mb of it *might have to leave it running overnight*
ok so yet another problem *sigh*
so it seems the internet thing is working fine now.
but i started downloading the BF3 update. it got to 19% then for no reason it dropped back to 1% and wouldnt budge.
any idea what could cause this?
and i think tomorrow i might change the router over.
ok so update:
i gave up on the download last night.
howeveri got a reply from sony regarding the issues.
pretty much they suggested that a signal strength of 80% + is needed.
so either a) move it closer (might do that and hook up to computer just to download)
b) run some cat5 from study to room with PS3. (which we had planned to do for years)
to forward ports use this site tells you pretty much everything even what ports for what gamesPort Forwarding Guides Listed by Manufacturer and Model - PortForward.com
MY 1980 VC SL/E Exhaust NoteBlack_Stig
If Cars could scream Rape, I'm sure yours just did because I just eye fuc&ed the shit out of the above images.
i dont even think 30m would be enough =P
might just make it if i run it through the house. but that doesnt look too neat does it =P
ill just wire it all up. in some spare time.
and thanks for the prot forwarding info.
but i need to make a static ip adress for it? or does that not matter if its wired directly in?
Be careful with port forwarding, I remember mine was a bitch to do when I got my first Ps3, made it NAT type 2 all that shit, but if you screw with your routers ports make sure you know what you're doing.
Also, I downloaded Back to Kharkand the other night at my mate's place, was about 50% and I decided to press "Download in Background" so I could message my other mate to tell him I was getting the maps, and it froze my playstation. Twice lol so don't DL in the BG or it might freeze up.
Apart from that, my internet is always dodgy on my ps3, I get times when my sony can't connect to my router for like 40 mins, but it's mainly down to the router, and signal strength. I have played on 40% strength with no lag, so it can be done, but is better if at least 60%

that info will definately help.
but here is todays issues.
started playing with the old router. but it couldnt even download 16mb for this other game *sigh*
decided to plug new router in... oh the pain and the trouble!
it was worse then old one. so plugged that back in.
now doing everything to get a Static IP etc.
and now it wont even connect back up.
so yeah.
back at square 1!
will see if someone sells 30m long cat5e or cat6 leads. (i actually measured this while setting everything up. and it came to just shy of 30m. so blue cable through the house =P)
if not i might ebay it. or properly wire it in.
*pulls hair out*
so problem solved.
solution: 30m cat5e patch lead.
its only temporary until i wire in a proper connection through the house (might aswell put one behind the main tv when i do it)
looks funny following a blue lead all the way through the house =P (thats right. all 30m of it!)
much much quicker now.
so for all those who have trouble just run a cat5e lead. (i got it from jaycar as i didnt want to wait for one to arrive)
i use my iphone 4 as a router, so i can play online.
it was about 15 months since i played and a mate discovered this handy bit of info.
i was some what not convinced...
but low and behold it works GREAT!!!!!
played a sold 6 hours online yesteday!
