    Default Power Supply Unit Problem.

Ok couple of days ago i turned my computer on and there was a sound that i can only describe as grinding, comming from my PSU. When somethings not working right i did what ever other male does and gave it a bit of a tap. FIXED!

Turned my comp off over night to see if it would do it again and, sure enough that sound returned, another soft tap and it went away.

The PSU isnt old, its maybe 6 months old... so ive got no idea what is happening. Any ideas?

It will be a failed ballbearing, the supply itself is fine, but the fans can fail

I thought it was a dirty fan as well, but i clean them pretty regularily.

Friend also suggested a failed ball bearing. Whats the fix? New PSU or what?

New fan in PSU. Legally you are NOT allowed to open the PSU up and it will avoid all warranty's aswell. The fan in the PSU is very easy to replace if your careful, abit of common sense really. They are normally a standard size fan, depending on the manufacturer.

Only problem is that with some newer PSUs, the wires for the fan are soldered directly to the board, rather than to a connector, meaning you'll have to have soldering skills to replace the fan.

never really liked buying cases that come with psus, cos i have an innate lack of trust. usually the people that make them (unless it's like coolermaster etc) are case builders, and i'd rather know every $ i spend is spent on the psu itself.

I agree, I just bought a shaw case with a PSU, its for my nephew. If i knock the case or give it a whack on top, the whole computer turns off instantly, also takes two more reboots for it to boot the hard drive. Quality

I bought 2 coolermaster cases, one for me and one for my brother. He got a PSU with his, its only 350w, but doest seem to be reasonable, but ill be upgrading it soon anyway to be safe. I just spent 130 on a Coolermaster PSU, and you can straight away see why its worth that. Its dead quite, and you plug in the connectors you need to the PSU, so you dont have a heap of unused wires laying around.

it would be ticking really fast which sounds like a grinding sound unless the fans spinning slowly

he mentioned that he tapped it before and the sound stopped... if it was a bearing the fan wouldnt be spinning at all when he tapped it?

True.... Check these now wires hitting it.
By knocking it, it could move the bearing getting it to sit in a spot thats quiet.
A wire hitting the fan is a fainter sound then a bearing,
