How often do you turn your computer off?
Did you know* It is a proven fact that a computer lasts longer if left running for longer periods of time without the power button being touched.
Computer systems were designed for air conditioned buildings such as offices.
With the amount of computers these days 2 out of every 3 households have atleast one computer system.
Leaving your computer running will not hurt your system in any way.
Power running through it actually prevents corrosion and/or bursting diodes.
So why do you turn your computer off when you go out?
Obviously to save power?
With computer systems getting more and more powerful year by year our demand for bigger power supplies has grown.
Could you imagine running a 1000w spotlight 24/7?
How often do you turn your computer off and why?
only in evenings cause i work, days, thee is that many bloody fans on the buckets these days who cares about overheating. my chassis has 4 big fans on the walls, 2 fans in my psu, fan on the video card and the cpu fan is 120mm and weighs like a kg
I turn mine off once every two months to clean it or unless we have a blackout
that first post is a load of bunkum
I assume it was copied and pasted from somewhere
no I once worked for center com computers
I have read the part bout the turning off from somewhere but its all my writing
Ive been running a computer basically non stop for almost 6 years and ive had less problems than people who have just bought a new one
Uptime of the server/file host thats hiding in the cupboard of the spare room is nearing 9months....
This laptop i'm on now is so far on 4months.
Cheers

I just recently had a customer who had their computer in a cupboard.
It started having problems that turned out to be siezed up fan in the power supply.
The case was so hot that you could hardly touch it with bare hands.
Once I removed the side cover of the case it looked like someone had put a shovel load of dirt in the computer.
This could have quite easily started a fire.
The performance of a computer can also be reduced by not doing a restart every now and again.

LoL...
Why would your cupboard be dirty???
This has 120mm in, 120mm out, 120mm on heatsink,, cpu temp is currently at 23c & ambient case temp is 26c has a sidewindow, an i run filters on all grilles. that get cleaned once a month......
You really think i'd run a server without thinking anything through.

Selling FG G6E Turbo and buying a N/A Supra
i used to run for days at a time when i was living with the folks, mostly cos i was ripping divX etc, but they weren't mad keen on it being on constantly.
now i've moved out with the g/f it stays on overnight to use the offpeak downloads, but not often, the wiring in this place is sub par and the box, external stack, mouse charger, printer and speakers are all on one 2 socket powerpoint (never use all of these at once though)
Main database/web server at work, 3 years 2 month 8 days
laptop is on usually 24/7 and pc is off when i go to bed because its too noisy to leave running when its next to my bed.
mines on most of the time, unless I'm away for a few days. I do a reboot if the thing starts to slow down. If I turn off before going to bed the missus looks at me strange and askes if the thing has blown up...lol
if im not on it, i turn it off, each to their own.
fail to see how having it turned on keeps things from coroding,
i am the god of britany spears womanizer on just dance on the wii
If you pulse electricity through metal after a while it will corode.
The more you shut down a computer the more you pulse the power through the board.
Don't get me wrong... Its safe to turn ur pc off ofcourse but it is better for the internals if they are kept warm and running at a decent temp (19 - 24 degrees)
Why do we have all these fans inside a computer and...
What is the point of the fans...
The fans only start cooling a computer after about an hour, Their designed for you to run it longer. (cpu and psu are an exception)
Restarting a pc doesnt count as turning it off... Im talking from a cold boot
Its like cars, bikes, trucks ect... most engine wear is from when it is started
There are 4 boxes here and all are on 24/7. I have read up on the pros and cons of leaving a computer running vs turning if off and it's pretty much a personal choice. There are logical arguments for both.
Main reason mine are left on is I hate waiting for a computer to start up. At work we have to turn all pc's off every night, there is actually a program that shuts down any pc left on at 9pm. Waiting for start up every morning on the two pc's I use is frustrating. When I asked IT why we can't just lock the work stations, I was told with 10 branches across Australia with so many computers the electricity saved by turning them off is enormous.

Not if it's a correctly setup server. It's only when you're opening and closing applications that do not properly release their memory when finished that you get better performance from a reboot. If it's just a file server, or running some simple services, quite often there is no need to reboot irrespective of uptime.
My main PC gets shutdown every night, but I have a media pc running linux and serves as a database, web and cron host, as well as a torrent box which I don't think has been reset for about 5 or 6 months now.
My computer is normally turned off every night due to the blue orb fan being off set to the grill, and it drives me insane looks like a dodgey disco light.
But will on occasion not get turned off for up to a week, its only the light/noise that annoys me caus its in my room.
Mums is on most of the time, gets turned off at night subject to downloads.
Server will run all the time when complete.
Only if I need to restart the computer or we are away for a whole day.
