i know there's already a thread to post your isp and plan, but me and the gf have been thinking for a while about stepping up from our adsl plan to a new isp and plan.
we're now with netspace adsl 512 15 peak, 15 off peak $49.95.
the one we're presently looking at is iinet naked adsl2, 15 peak 20 off peak $69.95, and we're 1.5 k from the exchange going by google maps.
we've got a phone line installed, but the lack of line rental/bills will offset the difference, the only problem i have is taht iinet is the new ozemail, and when i was living at home we had a ****ty ozemail 256 adsl setup, constantly dying and ****ty helpdesk, and worst a ****ty dns that'd say sites weren't there when they were.
is anyone out there on or have experience with iinet that suggests they're better? don't want to get into a 24 month contract with a $70 exit fee only to find they're ghetto.
I'm with iiNet and very happy. They are not the new Ozemail, they simply bought them out and took on all their customers. They have done it with a lot of smaller ISP's. I believe all the big ISP's do it, it's a pretty big monopoly.
But yes I am a very happy iiNet on ADSL2+, less than 1km from the exchange and syncing at approx 21Mb.
For more details though check out the whirlpool forums.
ive been with them (was a ozemail customer) and i was happy with both
I've been with Iinet on standard ADSL2 pretty solid service. Currently with Exetel though, which don't have quite the same support iinet do, but the service is just as stable, and a hell of alot cheaper.
Currently on a naked ADSL2 plan with 18gb peak and 48gb off peak for $50/month, and 100 voip calls included. Get download speeds of up to 1.8MB/sec pretty regularly.
Don't rely on distance as the crow flies for distance from exchange though. At my last house I was 200m from the exchange, but apparently 3km of cable separated us from the exchange.
ah, didn't realise that about the cabling, on an unrelated note, i read on whirlpool that exetel had been/had issued copyright infringment notices to users, whereas a friend at iprimus who works in the legal/childpronstopping section said that it's generally common practice not to bother with actually issueing the notices for piracy, simply warning users. ever had any experience?
Any serious infringements and any ISP will inform it's users. I believe exetel has a one warning policy. ISP's can't just ignore infringements, it makes them liable for the copyright infringement.
The chances of getting a notice if you do not use filesharing programs like limeshare are slim to none. Bittorrent with the use of things like peer guardian, and you're generally pretty safe. No filesharing program on any isp makes you immune from litigation.
a couple of ways, this one worked for me.
ADSL2+ Exchange Information
i used the phone number search, and the address search, the address search tells you details of how close you are as the crow flies, and estimated cable distance.
also
Broadband Choice
will give you info about who uses the exchange (searches by phone number) not sure if the first link gives this info.
whirlpool is the total win at this stuff btw
