check out Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir I've used this software for 6 years and it's always picked up viruses before they became a problem. As for Spyware, check Ad-aware and Spybot S&D (google it)

Try changing the scan settings in AVG to scan every file. By default it is set to "scan only infectable files"

also download the trial version of SuperAntispyware and run a full system scan with it. SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloads

Viruses/spyware are not the only things that will create major issues with your PC, certain maintenance tasks such as defragmenting your hard drive when not performed will cause your PC to run like ****

    Antivirus: AVG, Avast! or NOD32
Anti-spyware: Minimum Spybot: Search and Destroy, also try Adaware. Have heard that the Trend Micro one is good, as well as Windows Live OneCare.

DL and run Hijack This and then paste the results in the analyze window on their website. That will tell you if there are any processes running that shouldn't be.

I use McAfee, im not tightass
130 bux (got 65 back on cashback so really cost 55) for 3 computers total protection.
I rang there tech support, I allocated 3 hours free for the call, call ended up being 4 minutes and 12 seconds, with everything resolved and a quick chat regarding there other services.
If you have a virus and there scan doesnt remove it, you can ring them up and they will remotly get rid of it, though i havent tried this service.
