Jailbroke mine last night, for those that are unfamiliar, essentially a hack to give you access to the root directory to make changes.
From that, you can get apps, Cydia seems to be pretty popular, and appshare which is a browser based program, which lets you download new programs that further extend the iPhones uses. For example, swirly mms for sending mms messages. Another one which lets you do video. MXtube to download youtube videos straight to your phone, Winterboard for Themes.
So if anyone has an iPhone and has JB'd, share your apps and your sources.
I'm confused.
I just download apps from the app store. What advantage does this "Jailbroke" provide?
Well, essentially gives you full access to the phone. Instead of it being locked to the way Apple would want it, it allows you to customise and install programs that developers have created rather then using App store.
For example, Attachment #1 displays a theme, with custom icons and the addition of the 5 icon dock. Which allows 5 instead of 4 icons to be docked on the lower section.
Attachment #2 shows much of the same, the top row belongs to the program called categories. Which lets you create folders for your icons. So in Utilities I have all my apps that I don't use often enough to have on the normal screen, just to keep it neat. Language I have my translators and language tools, and Games is obviously games, including a NES emulator that plays NES roms.
Also shows snapture, which provides a more useful camera setup then the stock system, touch anywhere on the screen to take a photo, 1 or 3 burst settings, black and white, negative, sepia or colour settings, zoom.
And Boss Prefs, which provides a one screen option to turn on/off EDGE, 3G, Wireless, SSH (used to connect between PC and iPhone with a secure connection) Also allows you to hide icons etc.
Finally, attachment #3
Attachment 3 shows off the cover flow dock.
Insomnia, which is a program that runs the wireless connection in the background no matter what. Combined with a program called Backgrounder, it allows you to run Fring or Palringo 24/7 connected rather then disconnecting everytime the iPhone locks.
And of course, Swirly MMS, which lets you MMS from the iPhone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll also add the disclaimer that Jailbreaking your phone does void warranty if anything breaks. However I believe it's possible to revert back to the standard firmware.
LOL, nice catch.
I'll stick with the AppStore, I think.
My iPhone is slow enough as it is....
Was looking at these today, wouldn't want to run much slower, certainly no good for business use.
tommo is the iphone as reliable as your senator?![]()
Agree with minux... Worst problem though, is that the email password is sent in plain text from the iPhone.
I was unlucky enough to destroy my BlackBerry 8100 Pearl on Sunday while moving house (not mine). So Monday morning was a no brainer. Went straight out and replaced it with a BlackBerry Bold 9000. It has, without a doubt, the best screen on the market for mobile devices today. It's the perfect business tool but it includes all the popular stuff every other brand (well except the iPhone) has too, straight out of the box. AND it's not touchscreen... LOVE IT!
What's this slowness that we're talking about here? I'd put it on par with some Nokia's I've used that don't have touch screens.
Agreed though, would love some more performance out of it when comparing it to some of the other business orientated phones on the market.
Minux as far as reliability goes, from my side of things I haven't had one crash. Certain apps drop out randomly but its only those certain applications that are causing me grief. It's pretty consistent.
Don't get me wrong too, I'm not an apple fan nor am I really an iPhone fan, it does a lot of things I love, but it also doesn't do a lot that I wanted. Hence why I jailbroke it.
CSP,
The email password is only sent in clear text if you are using POP.
We're using exchange with SSL, nothing is sent in the clear (I am told).
It is just a fancy front-end to OWA anyway.
I tried a blackberry and find it the most un-userfriendly user interface in existence. I suppose it's different if you're used to it. Fortunately on the iPhone everything appears to be in the right place.
Downside is that the UI is extremely slow. There is alot of lag between screen transitions. I just updated to the 2.1 software and it blew away all my contacts, email and regional settings. Luckily resync wasn't a big issue, but I guess it highlight's Apple's lack of experience.
I do love the Appstore though.
I'm not having any of those problems Tommo, 2.1 left me clear and it fixed my 3G problems.
It seems as though there are a lot of different experiences. Apple have some pretty awesome customer support though, stories with people going in complaining of light leaking around the screen, where it joins the bezel part. And Apple replaces the phone like that.
Shame I'm with optus and they haven't responded to any of my emails going back as far as a month now.
well that isn't very fair the touch pro dosent compare it should be:
iphone vs nokia 5800 vs htc touch diamond.
by the way i have an iphone and its great.
I'd put down the one with the windows symbol.
Ive had 3 different brand sof PDA that have all run Windows portable or whatever the fsck its called and all 3 different brands ended up giving me nothing but issues. Its why I went back to a nice simple K850i, simply because it works. Besides, its awesome in meetings using it as a remote on my laptop![]()
I checked out an iPhone recently at the Apple Store when I was in Sydney. Very nice, very classy, just the sort of thing I'd expect from Apple. The iPod part of it is great, I can imagine the big screen would be great for watching movies while on the go. Still, I wouldn't buy one, because one thing I couldn't stand is the touch screen, and the STUPID on-screen keyboard, on-screen keyboards are no good on a phone, give me an old fashioned keypad any day of the week.
Personally, I'd be quite happy with an iPod touch, like I said, the iPod part is great, and if you can get over the stupid on-screen keyboard, the web browser isn't too bad either, but not an iPhone.
I hated the on screen keyboard when I first got it, was so slow, I'm still slower now if it's on silent, but if the sound is on for when I press a key, I can type as fast as I could with the traditional phone keypad.
First thing you have to do is learn not to fix your mistakes and let the phone do it for you.
Weeee
I know which phone I will be getting after xmas if 3g approved by Telstra.
The new Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Friend of mine who works for Telstra testing 3g products etc is currently testing one. It is by far the best phone I have used in a long time. Looks hell sexy too![]()
Haven't heard great things about the I-Phones. Some say it's what it doesn't do more then what it does.
Was offered a new one for $400 last night and laughed it off. I'll stay with the N95 8 for a while.
not being able to send movies you rename
not being able to msg properly on it
slow ass phones
