    Default Data recovery

I've got a few problems with a 2nd computer. It's a few years old and it hasn't been formatted since 2003. It's getting a few bugs and I've backed up most of my stuff, but I've still got a 4.5gb folder I need in the c:\ root.

Now this computer just shuts itself off out of nowhere, I've tried to burn a DVD but I haven't yet got past about 500mb.

I changed the power supply but the computer keeps magicly turning itself off.

I changed the jumpers and put the HD in another computer as a slave and it says it's corrupted, but when I change the jumpers back it boots up just fine.

Is there any way for me to recover this data?

Burn yourself a copy of Ultimate Boot CD, put the drive in another system, set as master, and another known-good HDD, set as slave, and copy the folder over. Thats what I'd do, anyway.

tried mounting the hdd on a usb >ide adaptor, from memory jumper switching isn't needed for that.

Agreed, that's all I do whenever I have a drive that's playing up these days.

Theres nearly allways a way to get the data off, but to what extent you want to go is another case.

The USB-IDE/SATA is the best option, running as a slave/secondary should work but doesnt always, many reasons why it may not, but I've just finished my working week so I cbf'd to explain

If you have the USB adapter and it doesnt work running a bootable PE enviroment and backing up that way can some times work to.
Unless the hard drive is actually failed in some way then there is no reason why the above shouldnt work.

If you have any problems, feel free to shoot me a PM, as I do this day in and day out for work. And if you get really stuck I'd be happy to do it for you and post it all back, as Im now on holidays

Thanks guys. I just ordered a USB-IDE cable of the internet and will be doing it soon. What a bloody handy cable, I never knew such a genius device existed. It'll make backing my laptop up simple.

I'll tell you how I go. Thanks for that Tom. Hopefully all goes to plan.

my mate runs a pc business, and this couple came in requesting data recovery from a dead hard drive, apparently would have cost nearly 200k to get the data recovered by a company in sydney that specialises in such requests. if your hard drive is wiped because u have illict porn that was once on there, it can be recovered as well as a fire damaged h/d.

200K??? Seems Im under charging people by hmmmm 199,934 bux.
We over a mid range of data recovery options, we draw the line of having to pull the drive apart and replicate it into another one, as its to risky, and a prick of a job.

yeah there are a couple of mobs doing them, i got one that has 3 heads on one end (sata, ide and laptop) and a usb cable out of that. mine didn't come with a power supply for the drive, but you only need that for sata and ide, laptop drives don't draw enough power.

it's all good though, i just use an internal power connector from my pc.

Laptop drives? I've never once opened my laptop.

This one has 2 IDE's and a Sata. No power connector, but I've got plenty of spare power things in my computer.

There are companies who do data forensics, and it's f#@$ing amazing what they can do, fire, water, even magnetically damaged drives can often be recovered.

$200k is on the pricey side, but generally they will charge a mint because some corporate data is priceless.

I think it's the same one I'm thinking of. It'll actually be a lappy hdd connector, but it's still technically IDE, just with 44 pins instead of the usual 40, also I think ks marginally smaller.

Turns out i'm under charging people by 200K then! Damn me and my good will. I even do memory sticks!

If the USB trick dont work, try a bootable CD with a GUI version of Linux on it (theres quite a few which are really friendly with Windows partitions).

Ok. USB trick didn't work. I ordered the cable off eBay, plugged in the power adapter and set the jumpers to CS. I tried it with all the variations of jumpers with no result.

At first when I plugged it in, it recognises a USB-IDE cable and installs the software and it gives me the safe to eject thing at the bottom.

But no new hard drive appears like it would with a USB.

The weird part is that I've got a backup drive which I connected normally with IDE and it registered just fine as a slave (there's no OS or anything on it, just directories). It won't recognise the drive with the USB cable.

Could it be a faulty cable?

    Possibly the cable.
It sounds like what mine does sometimes, it boots and detects the drive, but the drive doesnt appear in My Computer. I found that if I plug the USB in quickly after the drive boots up it works, but I have a seperate Power supply and not using the computers.

Also I never leave a jumper pin on, never tryed it with one on so not sure if thats your problem.
