Default who's pulled apart an ipod?

im putting a ssd mini pcie in my netbook and pulling out the 30gig 1.8" hdd, thought i'd put it in my old ipod which is 3rd gen which is this one

i've had it apart before to put a new battery in it, but didn't pay attention to the hdd's connector.
a mate told me that newer ipods have a flexi cable to connect the hdds but i dunno about the older ones. the 1.8" from my lappy uses a ribbon type connection which i guess is what he meant, but i'm not 100% on whether ipods this old use a mini ide connector or the ribbon type.

if the ipod won't take this ribbon connection, can i just put this 1.8" in a 1.8" external bay, i've only built 3.5 and 2.5 external bay before so the connections inside them are new to me.

i took apart an ipod mini that stopped working on me, basically i just walked outside to the road and threw it onto the ground as hard as i could.. el presto all the pieces came apart for me.
this method probably isn't appropriate for your needs

a couple of years ago i pulled apart an ipod and replaced the battery in it for a mate, the ipod died after a while due to an accident with a washing machine so he took the harddrive out and put it in an enclosure for an external harddrive. so yeah from memory the older ones are ide.

I've had my 4G iPod (which is similar internally to your 3G iPod) in bits before, and it uses a ribbon cable that ends with a I think 40 or 50 pin male connector on the cable. I don't know what your laptop uses, so I can't really say if it works or not...the best thing to do would be to either post a pic of the connector on the hard drive, or to pull the HD out of your iPod and compare the two.

crap, yeah the hdd i have spare uses a zif connector, which looks like this

from the sounds of things you describe it's not compatible, at least without an adaptor which probably won't fit in the case.

Nup, doesn't look like its going to work, sorry mate

    You could always do this...

    iPod Super | Command-Tab

But then it wouldn't be portable anymore.
