Please bear with me as i try to explain this & help if you can...
I am with Telstra for the internet(no funny comments) i find them great.. Anyway the other month i updated to the hightest speed with them to trial it out i also had to update some software for my modem (all done throught their site) to make sure my modem was compatable with high speed but it wasnt as fast as i thought so i changed back to the speed i was on....
Now when i was on the higher speed for a couple of days the activity light on my modem was staying on all the time and my Ethernet light would flicker randomly.. Now it didnt do this on the other plan i was on.. So i rang Telstra and the lady i spoke to (very hard to understand) told me it was my CAT-5 Cable (etherent cable) that was faulty and to replace it...
So i head down to the telstra shop ask them bout it they say (WOW) thats weird. They gave me a new CAT-5 cable to try, I come home try it still the same i swap back to the old plan i was on with new cable still the same... Now it wasnt like this before i changed plans.. Also at the same time my packest in & out tick over even when i not on the internet/not downloading/ No MSN nothing is happening but they still tick over in big numbers. So its got me a bit worried is this chewing up my GB for the month i have 25gb but I like to use it
Anybody have any idea what has happened or how to fix it.. my next step is to go to Telstra and say find out bout it and fix it. IE give me new modem or whatever.
Cheers Dave
did you cycle the modem???
when upgradeing to a higher speed you must kill all power to the modem and reboot (COLD BOOT) the modem for changes to take affect.
moto cable only youse http://192.168.100.1/ "do not" youse if not running cable modem motorola

Hey mate,
A flickering Ethernet light is normal - it's traffic travelling between your PC and the Modem.
What happens when you try to open up IE/Firefox and load up Google? I'm not really sure what the problem is, as a flickering Ethernet light is normal. If your problem is the amount of traffic that is happening when you are seemingly not using the Internet, then I'd suggest you check the following -
* Running any P2P programs (uTorrent, Limewire etc)?
* Do you have wireless and is someone leeching off it?
* Windows update downloading updates in the background?
* Spyware/Viruses?

thats what the some people have said but it never use to do it before when i was on the old plan thats why i find it weird that its started doing it... the actvity light use to flicker before wheni was on the net but never the ehternet light...
My father inlaw same ISP and same modem same plan as me and his ehternet light doesnt flicker only his activity light when he on the net
reboot it cant hert,,, simply unplug it from the wall, wait 30 second's and plug in.

Why don't you actually check your daily usage and see if it's on par with what you're using instead of worrying about which lights are flicking on and off. If you've upgraded the software/firmware on your modem, chances are it's changed the way it displays data on the lights.
It could be as simple as your computer sending ACK packets to the modem, maintaining the session, but that now registers as data transfer on the lights, when it didn't before... Your computer and modem are constantly communicating whether you're using the net or not.
Well i have checked the usage and YES its up more than normal.......
I know the light maybe doing different things now but i would say that the activity light should be on all the time when i not using the net.. FOR ANYTHING
Even unplugging the phone line out of the back of the modem the ethernet light still flickers....

both on the back of the hard tower and also the led labeld ethernet on my modem on the front
Open up the control panel and double click on your ethernet connection.
Is the Icon (2 computers - Flashing or solidly lit) If so, check to see if the received packets are counting. If so it could be something on your computer such as a virus, windows updates, antivirus updates, p2p, or something else.

It does tick over when the light flashes but nothing else is being used P2P MSN or viruse computer is all clean....
The thing that has me is the chick on the phone from telstra said the light flickers cause of a faulty CAT-5 cable.. tried 2 other cables brand new and it still does the same thing....
do you have any updates that may be being downloaded in the background?
the chick at telstra was peeing in your pool,, Network traffic is sent in electrical pulses, this is then run through the modem and picked up by it and displayed to you via the LED that is flashing.
if your lights didn't flicker i would be worried about a bung cable.
just re reading the thread,, what was the additional software you downloaded for the plan change??? possible it may have screwed your firmware?
to log into your modem open a browser and enter into the address bar 10.0.0.138
from memory the default login for them is

please someone correct me if this is wrong,, it has been years since i used a telstra connection mainly because they had the worst ever technical support. 3 hours on hold for them to tell me that the error on installation of their software is a normal thing and if it happens again or i cannot connect still to ring back then disconnect the call on me.. i changed the next day to internode and havent looked back. 6 years of great service!!
If it was a faulty cable/network card/connection it would pop a notification on your task bar saying "Local area connection disconnected" and then pop back on. If that is not happening, you can rule out a dodgy connection.
If the packet usage is not high in your network connections you can assume it's just the regular communication between the two devices.
How much higher is your monthly usage than normal?
Sorry guys been off for a while STUPID TELSTRA wont go into it but i won in the end and after the whole moving house debarckle its all sorted now..
Now i have a brand new modem/router and wifi capable free of charge from telstra after my whinge of a 3 day move house promise turned into 4 weeks........
The software upgrade i did in Dec or so had fried my modem hence why the lights were doing what they did.......... TELSTRA tech support have no idea what they were talking bout a guy from billing/complaints laughed at half the stuff i had been told by them... so now i have a new modem and the lights are doing what they are suppose to......
And as a bonus i can use my laptop in the lounge room wireless![]()
