ok we have a wireless router first thing wep is an encryption key isnt it?? second why cant i find my router i cannot find it at all on a wireless set up
Yes WEP/WAP are forms of encryption keys to secure it somewhat.
Im stating the obvious but you would be suprised how many people do this.
Have you turned your wireless on? lol, also check that the modem's wireless is on (if applicable). Can you connect via ethernet?
ethernet yes i can connect got three connected things connected atm wirless is turned on signal at full strength just cant pick it up
Is the modem/router and the computer/reciever both running the same frequency.
802.11a (54 Mbps)
802.11b (11 Mbps)
802.11b+ (22 Mbps)
802.11g (54 Mbps)
802.11g "Super-G" (108Mbps)

Some modems (especially telstra's) wont detect/connect to the wireless if its also connected via ethernet, not sure if this is relevent for you, but when trying to connect make sure your not connected via ethernet aswell.
Also maybe try a power cycle on the modem.
Is the SSID set to hidden? cos i set mine to hidden so ppl cant find my wireless router
Turn it off for 30 seconds, turn it back on, give it time to load and crap then try and find it.
Good point, which also makes me think of another possibility, some routers are "secured" so you need the disc to connect to, a big pain in the ass if you ask me. What brand and model of router are you using?
ohhh ive done the power cycle, nope deffinetly not hidden i have a i connect access
624w wireless
Ahhh good old iconnect, not the best router imo but it should still be connecting fine. Log into the router, and check the "wireless" settings, even take a screen shot and post it up.
To log into the router the IP address (using URL bar on browser) for iconnect is normally http://192.168.1.254 and the password is written on the bottom of the router, or try admin/admin or root/root.
hmmmm, have you got the latest drivers for your wireless in your computer, latest firmware for router (I dont recommend upgrading this just yet, because it should be unrelated).
Have you got another computer you can try with? or even an external wireless card/dongle to try. I assume your using the internal wireless?
external just bought an external one im picking up the neighbours but not mine my bro cant pick up ours with the ds either. didnt think i would need to update the drivers as the standard drivers should do it
Just do what i do and use the neighbours connection..
If you're SSID is set to display, you have the key correct, do you have DHCP turned on in teh router or trying to use a static IP for the wireless adapter?
Are you getting any error messages when you try to connect like ip conflict? limited or no connectivity, continual searching for IP??
if it does seem to connect, can you go to the properties for the wireless adapter and look at the IP address it is given?
Does your router see the wireless adapter in the client filter, if your router has one of these.
hope that makes sense as im on hold on the phone here at work while typing it out.
haha well cant use the neighbours thats encrypted lol ill check the DHCP but everythin is turned on ive check and checked and my other comp the one im trying to access the internet on doesnt pick my router up at all
DHCP Might hold your answer, another thought just came to mind. If you have connected via Ethernet, then DHCP will give you an IP address, so when you go to connect via wireless it might be trying to assign you one when you've already got one. Reboot both, without ethernet plugged in, and give it a whirl. I still doubt this, but im trying to think outside the box cause it doesnt seem to be like most wireless problems.
thanks tom for all ya help pitty we couldnt get it goin but stuff it im going to buy a new one
No problems, Im sure there is something that we have both missed. Assuming its a modem supplied by your ISP, give them a ring, im sure after being on hold for an hour, a few transfers, and broken english they should be able to sort you out.
If your going to buy a new one, I recommend Linksys(owned by Cisco), very well priced, and just an excellent product. Used alot in corporate enviroments.
yeah ill give em a ring first and yeah i was gonna check otu linksys cause i seem to pick them up when im looken for a connection hahaa they must be good lol
Nah IP addresses are assigned per adapters MAC address, if the DHCP range will permit it then you can have 2 IP addresses and effectively have a network bridge. But I have been proven wrong before..
Could also be bung hardware?
Another thought just popped into mind, can you connect easily if you remove the WEP/WPA key you are using? effectively making it free to air so anyone can use,, if this works, quickly think up a new key and turn the protection back on.
As Tom said, if you do get a new router grab a Linksys, Netgear or Billion, I use all these in different offices we have and have found them to be the most reliable.
Good Luck..
Muddy.
i cant actually see my wireless like i cant select it, it doesnt pick it up its like its not there
Ok,, Try grabbing the latest drivers for the wireless adapter.
It's been a while for me (a few laptops ago) but IIRC when I was using my old external adapter it didnt support the WEP encryption only the WPA (or the other way around) I ended up switching to the other encryption and using that until I got the new drivers. always pays to have the latest of all.
I'd also vote for a hidden/blocked SSID (wireless name broadcasting) from your router, or bung router. Pitty you're not in the Adelaide hills you could pop into any of the streets around me and try connecting to many different houses to eliminate the USB adapter.
