hi, just installed a new game on the PC, game installs fine etc, then after installation try to play the game but it comes up with a error "please insert correct CD-ROM......." i'm 100% certain the correct CD is in the CD-ROM drive (the same drive i installed the game from)
i've had this happen on a few games but previously though it was related to the "authenticity" of the CD in question.
i've had a quick look through the help section of the CD and it's given this advice,
Removable hard drives will often force windows to view your systems drives differently. Most often affected is the letter of the CDROM drive. Examples of a few errors that are generated due to the CDROM drive letter being changed by a removable drive are an error stating to insert Game CD into drive or an error stating a game file is missing. To alleviate a problem of this nature, first uninstall the game using add remove programs or the games own uninstall utility. Then reinstall the game under the CD-ROM’s new drive letter association.
i have un-installed game and tried re-installing, however it doens't give me a option anywhere to allocate the correct CD-ROM drive letter
BTW, game is command & conquer:generals
any advice appreciated

if you know what letter drive it's looking for the cd rom in, you could change the letter/path of your cd drive to that letter.

you'd probably have to look in some of the bat or ini files with text editor, some games etc make it easier than others, but if it's obvious that you need your cd drive to be say d:\ and your computer calls it e:\ then right click my computer > manage > disk management right mouse click the cd drive > change drive letters and paths, then just change it to what it wants it to be.
i haven't had anything like this happen with games, but i do know that a version of illustrator i used a while ago was defaulted to a cd rom on d:\, and mine was g:\
cheers mate, looks like i've gotta go and search some files

just going on what minux posted in lightnings thread, have you tried a nocd patch
GameCopyWorld - Command & Conquer Generals - NoCD No-CD No-DVD Trainers & Game Fixes
If it's asking "please insert correct CD-ROM", then it has found the CD-ROM drive just fine. What it hasn't been able to do is authenticate the CD that's in the drive as being the one that's required.
As you've stated you've come across this problem before, I'd suspect a worn laser in your CD drive (probably misaligned by fly's pube, which is enough to upset certain read functions).
BTW, you can change the drive letter of your drive(s) under Disk Management (part of System Management).

yeah, i spotted that yeaterday and tried it after posting this thread, it works now but i still want to find a permanent solution to this problem
yeah, i don't know. i tried using the autoplay function but thatdoesn't work either. you put CD in drive and autoplay launches the game to the opening menu (play, install, updates, help, un-install options etc) i click the play option and then it asks for you to insert the correct CD-rom.
i've also tried it through my DVD/CD drive and it does the same thing so i don't think it's a alignment issue

i've always just used the windows text editor.
this might be of some help if it matches your situation. epesh the registry part, it's possible entries were left from the first time round and they're pointing to a different place.
be careful messing with registry entries tho.
