big debate over the whole dell thing, heres a poll.
Can u Change Compaq to HP/Compaq??
I could give it a go
nope, donno how.
lol.
most people know what compaq is anyways
Sony....................
no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone
what are you after it for?
do you want it to be a dedicated computer for office apps and gaming etc? or just to mess round on the web/chat etc?
Whats the debate about the dells?
In my experience they are best bang for buck

i just recently bought a Toshiba. its pink! lol. But its great, the only thing i dont really believe they told the truth about, is the batteries life capacity.
cant beat dell, next buisness day warrenty at your door ftw!
ive got an upsec inspirion 6000 (up spec for its age 3 years ago), and one of those upspec bits is a high res screen, 1680x something, anyway 1 month of warranty left it blew a line of pixels in the screen, fixed the next day without a hassle, lucky it did it in warranty cause a replacement screen dosnt leave much change from $800

i used to think the same. there are very few windows programs that don't have a mac version. Not always the same but you;d be hard pressed to miss out on anything.
I do use a windows machine as a server, and you can probably fiddle with settings a little more but if i had the spare cash i'd probably swap it to Mac as well.
My macbook has windows installed as well, as the silly government will only release their one-off reporting program for windows, even though more than half of staff on lease now use mac.
Using windows on here after using the mac side is a little like a step back in time. In fairness there isn't much resource allocated to the windows side but i assure you that if it was all you used for a while and you aren't a hardcore hacker or gamer or whatever it is a very stable and more than adequate machine.
It certainly takes some getting used to but I'm hooked anyway.
my dell came with a 6 hour battery, with the option of a bigger 9-10 hour battery that sticks out a bit at the back. another good point for dell

lol, no-one loves acer.
dell FTW ive never had any problems with any dell probuct other than a screwed psu (was my falt) and they fixed it the next day.
dell its cheap and generally reliable
I have a dell at work and I hate it. I would rather use pen and paper, in fact I'd rather use stone and a chisel. If you have the dosh get a IBM Think pad T43 or a lenovo (same mob new name) X61.
Mike
I can vouch for the Lenovo/Think Pads. I have one, it just wont die, it use to get knocked off the table by the previous owners daughter all the time, Ive sat on it (im a big boy near 100kg's), It was kept in my backpack every day for nearly a year getting chucked around, survived a water fight, now sits on the passenger seat in the car and has survived many falls to the floor or into the door... strong as ****, the screen hinge is now broken, and sometimes if your not careful lifting the lid it will push the battery out, so I used some araldite to hold the battery in and its as good as new now lol.
Also done corporate installs of them last year, and they are just a pleasure to work with. BUT they are ugly as sin, and looks old and crappy but they are a good laptop, oh and the mouse takes some getting use to.
As I run my own computer shop, I would say NONE of the above!!!!
I don't even have a laptop but I've seen enough of the Intel powered Mac's running Mac OS/Windows to know they are the clear winner. However it's not in the poll so you will never know

What's wrong with Dell? Their cheaper laptops are good value, and their support second to none.
If i had to whine about one brand of laptop it would be apple. Their build quality doesn't seem to be particularly bad (if you open one up, everything seems to be well made), but somehow most of them manage to shit themselves in some way in the first year, and then you get to experience how poor apple's support it.
