    Default naked dsl questions

my parents have awful, archaic internet. not as bad as i used to think, iinet might have bumped up their service, but 39.95 plus line rental for 1 gig peak 1 gig off peak, speed test shows 3312kb/s, i think they can do better.

they started out with ozemail which became iinet and now god knows, but because they're spazzes they MUST MUST MUSt keep their ozemail addresses.

i checked the iinet site and they do naked adsl2 + for 49.95 with 2gb +2 gb.
only prob is, the line the modems on now has been having issues, the phone on it doesn't work anymore (and no phone plugged into it works) and the fax on it often shows 'phone off the hook'
the folks don't need this phone or fax cos there's another line and they rarely use the fax, just wanted to know if they go with iinet naked and the line ****s up, will telstra fix it? or will it cost a bundle?

If they are already having problems why not get telstra out to check it out before they go naked?

If you have at least 1 phone line, there is no point getting naked DSL. Naked DSL you pay a fair bit more for than regular ADSL (eg $49.95 with TPG will get you something like 20gb + 10gb of 24mbit ADSL2+).

If they don't use the second line, cancel that and you'll save on the line rental, then get ADSL activated over the existing line. If it drops out a lot then hassle Telstra to repair the line. This happened to us, and if you nag them enough they will do it.

i thought on adsl 2 there was a limit to how many phones you could safely have on it? also they will occasionally plug the fax into the phone line, but it won't live plugged in.

Naked ADSL2+ can be had for cheaper than ADSL1 example: Exetel

    Naked $45.00/m 54 gbytes (off peak 12am-12pm) 6 gbytes (peak 12pm-12am)
    ADSL1 $40.00/m 54 gbytes (off peak 12am-12pm) 6 gbytes (peak 12pm-12am) +line rental, minimum $20/m

I'd say get helstra out to fix your phone line, then swap to a Naked plan, hence removing line rental. and you still have a second landline for phone and fax if they so wish.

That is fine. As long as each of the phones has a filter on it, there is no issue. There is an upper limit to how many phones you can have connected to a line (but is unrelated to DSL).

Just get the DSL service on the phone line you are going to keep (and it won't be a naked service then). As mentioned above, if you are paying for one voice line rental, you may as well utilise it for the DSL.

To answer your question, if you did get naked DSL and the line goes faulty, iiNet will arrange for Telstra to come and fix it - even if there is no voice service on it (i.e. naked dsl).

    Hardly.

The ULL service that iiNet purchase from Telstra has set timeframes for fault resolution. There is no "conspiracy theory" that results in your line only being fixed if you use Bigpond.

Ahh ok, I was told by westnet about the "conspiracy theory" and sadly it wasnt far off initially, until I whinged and carried on, and they were out a couple of days later (initial time was atleast two weeks). But in saying this, I was dealing with Westnet who were dealing with Telstra, and I dont hold either in very high regaurd lol.

Westnet (now wholly owned by iiNet) are a fantastic company, a very honest bunch of people.

May have been a "Telstra hater" helpdesk monkey you spoke to.

    Quite possible.
I do agree Westnet have/had some great service and always seemed to be honest, and spoke very good english.
It was in the last months of being with them, that I lost my respect. After ringing up, and going through a fault diagnosis due to the net not working at all, I was told to Google my problem[EDIT] Obviously you see my dilemma here lol, but I did make a complaint about this helpdesk operator, which they seemed to take seriously on my end[/EDIT]. After that incident(same incident as I mentioned above), I chose to change to a local company which is faster, cheaper and more downloads. But in the 3 years or so I was with Westnet they were always great service.

    Wideband it is.

I have a feeling I was talking to you last year (via PM) about Work placement/ IT Industry, but I lost all my PM's and never got back to you. If it was you, thanks for all your advice, and sorry about not getting back to you.

    Except that's ADSL1, not 2 you've quoted, but I take you point.

The OP said he was going to keep 1 phone line though, and if you have a line you'll be paying rental on it anyway, so you may as well get regular ADSL.

Yeah you're right, ADSL2+ is $10/m cheaper than naked, but you then have a $30/m line charge.

I'm confused......they currently have 2 landlines, do they want to keep both landlines, (one for dsl the other for phone/fax) or do they want to get rid of one landline and share the remaining landline between dsl and phone?

I was under the impression they were keeping both, hence why i went naked for the dsl. why pay for a landline when you don't need to.

If they are only keeping 1 line, then go adsl2+, but not naked. too hard to explain how voip works to technically challenged people!
