i dont see the issue.
have you thought that they are asking if you want the hard drive - meaning exactly that - so they dont have to bring the whole tower along for no reason?
if its such a big deal then get another job.
they say many things hard drive, mother board, tower, up and down thingy with the on button lol
yeah i was talking to a girl at work who nuked her pc, i told her i'd do the reinstall since she had a licenced cd, just no skills.
she asked me if i wanted her to bring the hard drive in.
i was like 'no, i'll need the whole pc, i don't have the same motherboard as you, so the drivers won't be the same'
after a blank stare and a conversation that was very confusing to both sides, i realised she meant the case.
thank god she's pretty.
And that is exactly the problems i get. Just some misunderstanding between the 2 people but i now ask the question beforehand if they mean the computer.
Although that approach makes me look like i don't know much, when someone who does know a bit about computers asks me about a hardrive.
how about instead of saying,,, "no the whole computer etc"
"Yeah the tower/case with the HDD in it would be all I need, dont worry about the screen KB, mouse etc."
I get this all the time and mostly from the people that didn't grow up around computers and only have one because Bob and Jane down the road have one.
The funniest thing is when they get a virus or something, they come in and make a point it wasn't from downloading porn.. Do they think we are going to advertise it on the internet that ****** was visiting this porn site and caused a mass corruption of data or something like that?
Yeah I get this all the time fixing/building pcs: "just the hard drive?"
Seems people have just adopted the wrong nickname for what I like to call the 'box'.
It's not really an issue for me, I just call it whatever they call it, saves headaches.
I callz it the tower.
Oh another pet hate at the moment. When telling someone an email address, or putting a code in the computer.
Is that in capitals? It doesn't matter ffs.
I always make a point of calling it the 'box'. Working in retail electronics, you get too many different names. So if someone asks what they get for that price, I say something along the lines of "The keyboard, the mouse, and the box with ..... in it".
lol i work in schools, doing tech support.
I had a teacher today asking if she has to bring her whole laptop to just the part that had the keyboard on it, she then proceded to tell me that the screen on her brand new Lenovo R61, just slided on and off, all you have to do is take out the 14 screws.
So i followed her to her class room, where there was a percision screwdriver set and a whole heap of screws
- worst of all, the problem was settings related not hardware.
it is only 10am, it is going to be a long day...
- while typing this, the guy from IBM/Lenovo came to fix another laptop, he litualy fell of his seat when i explained what happened& showed him the laptop.... Such a nice guy, he put it back together for me, after talking the piss for about 40mins
hahahahahahahaha
To all the techs actually having a cry about this, why? these people don't want to know the details, don't give a crap about about hard drives and what is a box. These are the sort of people who give us jobs to do and allow us to earn money doing something we enjoy.
Smile, nod, and keep the funny stories for later![]()

i try and have a basic understanding of whatever i am using so i don't have to go to tech peoples :P
i also try and adapt that rule to everything i use

Kinda makes me angry when people can't spell simple words correctly. Do you know the difference between there and their? Obviously not judging by the incorrect use in your subject line. Also please note that hard drive is two words
You might want to reflect on that next time someone is as bad at knowing computer component names as you are at basic spelling.
Thanks for pointing out my spelling mistakes... I'm sure when you go to another country and learn a second language you'll be happy for someone to point them out for you too.
But i get what you are saying, people are good at certain things and others have no interest in things like computers or cars so they do not know the lingo, but its like calling a car a fuel tank. I'm only expressing my opinions.
She'd laugh just as hard at you for using the word "slided".... just a matter of knowing different things isn't it? you know computers and she knows English.
OP - not everyone knows all the terminology for everything. i concreted the a massive part of the backyard but because i had never had to talk about concrete before i probably called it cement a few times. the 'pros' probably thought it was shit, but my expertise is in a different area. hell if we all knew everything they wouldn't need you to fix it in the first place.
however if getting annoyed everytime someone gets a word wrong is your rise for the day then happy days buddy. I see simple English as something people shouldn't stuff up - yet you stuffed it up royally in the thread title for the whole world to see.
See the connection?
Its the arrogance in the IT field. I dont know one person who works in IT who isnt an arrogant pig when it comes to IT, me included. As you said, because we know one thing, doesnt mean we know a thing about something else. All my family either work in Aged care or Construction, and I do find it humerous at times when there on the computer, but at the same time Im sure they would laugh there heads off if I was trying to dig a dam.
I think its ok to have a laugh about some of the stuff that happens, just like mechanics etc would, but you cant laugh or belittle your client/customer, and obviously its only a joke another IT person will understand.
Comparrison, hearing my two mates who are both mechanics, crack jokes about this guy who removed his supercharger to change spark plugs, now to some they wouldnt get it or understand it, like my IT work mate who was there at the time. But if we started making a joke about the client who wanted to run a VPN over dial up to cut costs, they would have been completly lost aswell.
Never whinge about your client, they pay your income.
People have too much time on their hands if this is the biggest thing in their day.....
The world is not going to end if someone spells a word incorrectly or calls a thing by the incorrect name.
