Hey guys. Quick issue I'm having, I'm setting up a media drive for my cousin the exact same as mine bar the brand of HDD. The issue I'm having is that I cannot format it to NTFS (has to be this or won't operate), I have tried a quick format and a full one with not luck.

What are you using to format it? and whats its reason for failing?
Could always boot it up with Ultimate Boot disc, and do a scandisk, and see if its got any bad sectors. If its brand new, it could be a dud or failed, you will find most hard drives to fail with in the first two weeks, or after 5 years.
What brand is it our of curiosity? Im guessing Seagate
[EDIT] So it will format as other's just not NTFS? [/EDIT]
try downloading and using swiss knife Swiss File Knife - Utilities & Operating Systems - File Management - Downloads - CNET Australia, or run a live distro and format it from that, much faster than windows.

It's a brand new HDD, it's a Hitachi. It will format to exFAT or reverts to RAW. In exFAT format it will operate as an external HDD but not work as a media drive. The error message when trying NTFS is simply the drive did not format correctly and it reverts to RAW format.

Plug it in as the master drive and run the xp install. (unplug other drives first.)
shouldn't be able to see it if you havent,, but you have set the partition on it???
add it as a master drive insert your win cd and start the install process,, let it format the drive then power off the machine and you're set
Problem was the freaking jumper. mine was shipped with the one jumper pin this with two. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
