how to tell what drivers i need?

just installed xp pro on a friends pc and i'm not sure which drivers i need.

need to find the right drivers for ethernet and video (both are onboard) but the manufacturers website has heaps of different drivers for each, and no real way to tell.

pc is a hp compaq dc7100 sff

i could open the case up to check for a board model, but it's one of those impossible to open/screwless ones so i'd rather not have to again.

look on google sorry i just cant remember what its called but it actually scans your comp and checks what drivers it needs

another good idea, is there a service tag on it anywhere?

or you could just search around the HP site for drivers, you will need to search real deep to find them, there should be stickers attached to the computer to make it easier. If not you are in for a loooooong evening.
I have only ever done one HP computer,, and swore never to do it again..

the only info on it was the serial and the model number.
only prob was that the hp site had that model number listed (no info about the serial or board number) but it had like 3 or 4 options of graphics and network drivers.

in the end i got lucky with graphics, but network i downloaded a 10mb, a 60 mb, then finally a 30mb that was right

To find out what Graphics driver he uses download this program here http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_149.zip

Go into the Motherboard Tab (or Mainboard as it might be called) Look at the southbridge and that will tell you what one it is. As for the the LAN it should just be this one here http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=ir-66362-1

bah, even easier way...

Start / Run / "devmgmt.msc" / *find ! driver* / properties / details tab /

Google the VEN_#### number and the DEV_#### number... will tell you what it is and who made it, then back to HP's website to download the right one.
