just wondering who else has a netbook out there.
i've got an eee 900, came with a 30 gig hdd, but i pulled it and put a 32gb ssd in it's place so it's shockproof like they should be.
the rest of the hardware is sweet. onboard wifi, 900mhz cpu serves well for most applications, might up the ram from 1 gb to 2 gb.
just curious what other forum users have, and any mods they've done?
Their not bad little machines.
Ive worked with a few of the ASUS when they first came out.
Only problem with them IMO, is the stats on the hardware. Though it wont be long until they bring out a core 2 one to run Vista/Win 7
the first gen eee700 wasn't that great, i had one, the cpu's clocked down to 630mhz and the fsb is 90 iirc, i sold mine a bought a eee900, which has the cpu at 900 and the fsb at 100.
they've since brought out newer models, some of which have 1.6 ghz processors, but those models are bigger than the first series and it really goes against what i need it for. sure i'd love the extra processing power, but at the sizes they're getting towards i'd rather a full laptop.
on the win7 front, there's talk on the eeeuser forum that windows 7 runs better than xp on some peoples. i personally just run xp/ubuntu dual boot.
I've been thinking about it, I liked the look of the Asus something or other, 160gb drive, 2gb ram, Atom processor, HDMI and wifi of course.
I was going to use it for playing movies basically. But I'm getting slack for the idea.
yeah those are the bigger ones, they're not huge, just bigger than i need.
hopefully i'll eventually get round to my final goal which chucking it in the glovebox, chuck a usb wireless modem in it and is hooking it up to a touch screen in the dash of my car.
bax if you're getting that model for the hdd, you can get ssd's up to that size, and swapping it out is a cinch, but it sounds like you want it for the hdmi etc, which i don't think mine supports.
i've got a vga > composite cable but i haven't tried it. i heard they often don't work with the vertical hold, so i don't know if mine will work, but i hope it does so i can use it to wifi stream from my desktop to the telly
if you're keen to see what can be done on them, what they can run, and mods people do check eeeuser.com they have forums and also a wiki that's full of howto's. lots of useful info
Thanks for the link, here's what I was looking at.
AsusN10JC
HDMI out
10.2" screen
Netbook form factor
Dedicated 9300M GS Nvidia graphics (which can be isolated for power saving)
6 cell battery
Intel Atom N270 processor
2 Gb RAM
160GB Hdd
Runs XP
And yeah, HDMI was a pretty important factor for me, a friend is telling me to hold off because of the newer releases coming out. And I think there is an Asus coming out that's tablet based, can rotated the screen and make it into a tablet etc - it looked quite good.
i haven't heard about that tablet style netbook, but i've read a bunch of reviews of the n10's and they looks nice. it's cool that there's a range of options in them too.
I don't own one but I sell them at the big blue buildings all around australia* down at Ferntree Gully.
Didn't have much knowledge on them but had an Acer guy come in and give a little training session, They seem like a fair good product, something that weighs nothing can be put in a bag and used for emails at maccas and stuff, there is one that has Linex on it and seems very good as its got a nice tidy menu.
After my cars done probably get one for sh!ts and giggles when the cost drops down and the hardwear increases =P
The Acer Aspire One 160Gb is the most popular so far that I've sold
*Can't say for legal reasons for some really odd reason
yeah i work at a black and white wearing retailer. i got my first one for 500, sold to a mate for 200 when the new ones came out, got the new one for 499, less 10%, less 10% so 363. the linux that comes with the asus ones is ok, a bit restrictive but i used to til i got some linux skills back.
i wouldn't recommend them for regular notebook duties. but as an on the go thing for basic documents/online duties they're ace
I'm holding out till Nvidia release their new ION platform which can do full 1080p, the newest chip just released by Intel can only do 720p. I also may wait till windows 7 comes preinstalled.
I run an old Toshiba TE2300. 1Ghz, upgraded 120GB HD, 512MB memory. Its a bit slow and i will be upgrading this year some time, possibly to a new toshiba or asus. But its heaps convenient compared to my old desktop i had before the this notebook. I run a wireless network with it and a cordless mouse. It sits beside me on the arm of the lounge and the other arm is the mouse pad![]()
