I use Symantec AntiVirus Corporate 10 on my laptop, my old computer, and the family computer. It seems to do the job - pops up every now and then saying it fixed something

Spybot is a spyware scanner, not an anti virus program, which is why it has never detected a virus

It should be run along a good anti virus program though.

+1 for Sophos...we get it provided to us free of charge by the uni...its excellent. Uses very little system resources and seems to catch just about everything. Its just a shame that they only deal with corporations, and not end users, otherwise I'd have no problems with recommending it to just about anyone.

Other than that though, I use AVG...for free its pretty good, despite version 8 being a bit heavier on system resources than the earlier versions...

Had used it for years and just renewed my key. Was looking for other alternatives. Didn't want to go back to Norton (which I used for quite a while before hand).

Avira Antivirus! They offer a free version which offers very powerful(but basic) active file scanning. It has a nag window that pops up every so often to remind you to buy the full version, but that's easily disabled after a quick google search. Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir
