    Hi all,

Calling for anti-virus software recommendations. Prefer something with low overheads but still works! I don't need the firwall and extra internet security bs.

Thanks for that. I found norton way to resource hungry and am looking around for alternatives.

Norton is a Virus Theres no other way to describe such a useless resource hungry program, and it costs money.

I use McAfee, not bad but after some issues with them and there licencing I wont be renewing my licence, but perfect for a basic home user.

I use Kaspersky in all corporate enviroments when we get the choice, excellent scanner, very low resources needed, and its fairly cheap (buy online) and there licencing and customer servive is very good.

AVG isnt a bad FREE scanner, Id still use it over Norton but not on anything crucial.

    Avast is worth trying.

    Free, runs on xp,vista, 7, x86 & x64.

Low footprint and by far the least annoying.

Defaults to 4 hourly updates though, so if your a bit paranoid and have a high speed connection set it to hourly to take full advantage of their response times to new threats.

I use Symantec Corporate 10 because I have an unlimited license from work, I never notice any excessive resource whoring, and you only know it's there when it finds something.

    for me.

Whats what we've got a home (McAfee) works fine, very user firendly and easy to use. Shits all over Norton... god norton is gay lol

Personally i do a full uninstall/install of windows and start again if your changing antivirus software

I use Nortons. Their new 2009 range is very lightweight - Norton AV 2009 is currently using 11MB of RAM when open, 3MB of RAM when minimised on my system.

i use avg and avast. avg ok, and lightweight but apparently doesn't catch everything.
avast is bulky and apparently catches more. also it's updates are occasionally brutal.

one of the things about avast i DON'T like is that you can't turn it off entirely. when i went to the official forum, all the fanboys were like 'why would you want to ever turn it off, it's rad!" which shat me, because it's my pc and if i don't want something temporarily i should be able to kill it.

I use trend, but a bloke at work had it too and he had a virus it never picked up that avg did. So FTM im sticking with it and i sorta recommend it but im sure theres better ones. My biggest gripe is the updates are always in the 30-50MB area every 24 hours

Sophos corporate distro... only cos its freely provided to me.

I'd say AVG is your free virus program of choice.

Norton or anything Symantec is hungry... cant comment on 09 range, but if its anything like its predessors... no dice.

    +1 for AVG.
Free version gives you basic protection. But to get the full advantages of AVG you need to really get the Full Professional version.
The full version scans for rootkit viruses, whereas the free one doesn't. Rootkit viruses are becoming increasingly popular.
Full version also has safe surf real time scanning and serveral other features.
I get the full version for free as I am a reseller for the company.

How much does that cost to buy from you?
