I will be changing our ADSL and phone service from Telstra to a new provider soon.
Something similar to 1.5mbps, 20GB+ shaped.
We cant get ADSL2 here which sucks, I have been looking mainly at Internode, iiNet, and TPG specifically into their VoIP bundles.. from what i have researched it simply utilises your high speed internet connection to receive and make calls, does anyone have any experience with VoIP??
My main concern is if the power or internet connection went down the phone would be useless?? If thats the case can anybody recommend a good ISP which also offer standard home phone line with their ADSL plans.
Many Thanks
depends how much your voip is owrth u can get pretty crappy ones at like 300 that will cut out when the nets is down or will force youre net to scrash
then there is symtems worth 1500 that wont crash as much and hase different ports manyl for businesses
Im with ace communications that does the lan line adsl and Voip ina bundle pack tho i dont need as much as u so i only got the 5gb pack mayb check them out see wat they can do?

I am on internode with VoIP service.
basically here is what I pay per month.
$20.95 = Telstra Budget Line Rental (Required for ADSL1 to work)
$59.95 = Internode 1500 20GB Plan
=$80.90 + VoIP phone calls charged at 10c Untimed for local and STD phone calls and 15c p/m for mobile calls through www.mynetfone.com.au
I am on the Whirlpool Saver Plan
Because you are on ADSL1 you will still have your telstra phone number that you can make calls out on if Internet/VoIP goes down.
Your better off looking at VoIP through another company rather than through ISP's. They are generally cheaper. Check out Mynetfone and particularly the whirlpool saver plan link above.
If you setup VoIP get a Unit that has FXO fallback on it, such as the Linksys SPA3102. - SPA3102 MyNetFone Deal
With this unit it plugs into your broadband modem. You plug your telstra line in and your phone into it. When you make a phone call it goes out through the VoIP system.
When the phone rings, the incoming call will come through the same handset, but it will be working off the Telstra line.
PM me for more details.

Thankyou for that holdensupporter, some very useful info there i think I grasped most of it
So, no matter what ISP i change to I will still be paying $20.95 Telstra line rental?
I have been looking at that Internode ADSL plan, definitely great value for money and great rep from Internode.
With the VoIP with mynetphone, the Linksys SPA3102 VoIP Phone Adaptor, in the diagram at the bottom shows only one pc connected. I have 2 pc's so can you still connect the pc's directly to the router? and could you recommend a good 4 port router?
Definately interested in the FXO fallback feature on it.
Thanks again.
Yep you will still need to pay line rental to Tel$tra for Internet Service to work. Unless you are in an area where you can get Naked ADSL2 which doesn't require line rental.
Internode are a very reliable and competitive ISP.
You can connect all your PC's to a modem / router as well as the VoIP unit. Linksys are generally the best brand that I have come across.
If you have a broadband modem already you could look at getting the Linksys WRT54GL Wireless 4 Port Router (RRP $129.95). Connect in your modem to the WAN port on the back and the other computers into the 4 ports.
If you don't already have a Broadband modem. Probably the Linksys WAG54G which is a Wireless 4 Port Modem / Router (RRP $219.95). Very similar to the WRT54GL but has the built in modem function.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this one may lead to an answer.
Currently we are on a Telstra wireless broadband plan as ADSL is not available where we are due to no slots left in the exchange. We do not have a phone line as I don't see it as being worth it.
We are using the Linksys SPA3102 unit with a standard telephone plugged into it using VoIP. We are with Pennytel, which have been good, but the wireless broadband is letting us down as far as consistency goes. Especially around 8pm, we have next to no internet. Dial up would be faster. When on the phone it will work for about 5 minutes then gradually drop out until we can't hear the other party and they can't hear us. I'm pretty sure it is a wireless internet issue.
My question is, does anybody else have VoIP using SIP? If so, who are you with?
I ask because I can't get hold of Pennytel at the moment and our phone hasn't been working for a week. Their support system is being upgraded apparently and the only way we can contact them is via email and they haven't responded.
