I have a Wii and want to connect to the net. I don't want to use the current wireless router that I am using as I am very close to going over quota on my monthly plan as is. I was thinking of getting a prepaid 3 wireless usb modem and using that. But what I want to do is plug the usb modem directly to the usb of the Wii. They have a plan that cost $150 for 12gb for 12months, this will be plenty for the Wii and I can use it on the laptop if I need too.
Will this work?
Has anyone done it or can try it cos I wanna do this but don't want to spend the money on something that won't/can't work.
Thanks
Nick
However, you could share an internet connection via a USB modem through the laptop. You would just need to connect the wii to a new wireless network. Then your laptop basically runs as the router.
Thanks for the info, although it's not what I wanna here but at least it saved trying it. Oh well might have to look into a new service provider to get better download limits for the same price. Didn't really want to (I was hoping this would work) but oh well.
The Wii itself doesn't use alot of online data so you should be alright.
Mariokart online rocks9,999 points here I come lol
If you can, you'd be better off just using the money you'd pay for the 3 Wireless on upgrading your existing plan to a bigger quota. You pay a lot per GB for mobile broadband at the moment, and it's generally a lot slower.

But we have a really crappy plan atm (2gig peak 4gig off peak) and it doesn't take much to chew through that with basic web surfing. Might look around for a few other suppliers but not sure what not name suppliers are like for service and others like telstra can be costly.
P.S Mario Kart Wii online is awesome fun. Who would of thought it could change the game that much.
Yeah I know, just don't wanna get stuck with one that has a crap service. Eg. lots of downtime, no help with any probs etc. I'll find someone I'm sure.
It'll cost like 20 more a month to get a couple more gb on your quota
(didnt read all posts)
Adam/Internode/Westnet (for ADSL1) are best atm
LOL, I thought so. No worries I'll let you know if I do, do you get a free month of internet access or something?
Um, here's a few suggestions:
Netspace or Internode.
Internode have fairly quick speeds and a good name. Netspace are really good with service, whenever i've dealt with them it's been quick, but that may be because i have a priority line with them.
You could also use WhirlPool's search to find a good ISP:

Yeah I've done that. Adam seem to be the best so far, looking at their 20gig for $50 plan. Speed doesn't concern me too much. Thanks for the suggestion.
A solution that may work for you:
These 'mobile' wireless internet services aren't just restrict to a USB device. Telstra offer mobile internet WiFi routers which use the same principle as the USB modems do. You stick a SIM card into the wireless mobile router, configure it accordingly and connect your Wii to the WiFi network which the router is broadcasting.
I configure these things for work which are deployed into remote mining offices. They work pretty well in the middle of no where!
I'm not sure about the cost, or if they've even released it as a commercial consumer, but it may be something you want to look into.

With Internode here, but something to keep an eye our for is 3G wireless backed by optus through Internode. Am holding my breath on the pricing and how billing works though. Have had pre-paid optus 3G for some time now and its a good backup when out and about, not the cheapest though but better coverage than three.
I put the wii on wireless (during the off peak time midnight to midday) and with it being online for the first time, downloading the first update and playing for a total of 4 hours (mario kart.... it's great fun and addictive) I only used about 140mb of data. Which is stuff all but enough to throw out the peak usage. So I only connect it to the net when I wanna play online.
