ok this car im getting next week[ vzss 6l]my tuner wants me to put a 3800 stall in it and 3.9 gears. as never owning a auto will this still be driveable on the highway or has that gone out the window and it will rev its tits off.

it will be fine if its a lock up convertor.
so something like a red dimond stall???

does that car have a modified camshaft in it or is it stock?
I would aim for about 3500rpm if its not a big cam.
As Tom said make sure its a lockup convertor.
I had a 2800 stall in mine and took it out because I found it was annoying around town.
As already mentioned, make sure it's lockup converter. 3.9 diff will be on the higher end of revs for country driving. If you rarely go country it is ok, but if you go country heaps, then 3.7.

thanks for your help yea it has cam dus cai twin 2 1/2 and its tuned. i live in town but get a work carso it will only get driven on weekends and on the odd time go for a drive to bris but it will see the quarter as well also how strong are the auto in these things will they hold together or are the like the vr vs box that you kill the auto pritty easy

why so neg on non lock up converters?
Stock the autos are iffy if thrashed hard, eg wheelspin and then hooking up under power.
Built Autos are ok but will still suffer, can be hit and miss.
I went t56 as i dont want the hassles cause some people have good ones and some replace them every few weeks until they get done propperly.
Make sure you get a big trans oil cooler as well if your going for high stall.
ok so what tends to brake in them? is it expensive to get one done up so it wont brake? any idea on price you sound like you have killed a cupple lol. what sort of hp are the good for? i take it is the weak link in the whole the drive line i just would rather fix it before braking it.

Its not a case of breaking them usualy they will just fry the clutch plates with a bit of power.
If you not pushing heaps of power they will probably be ok.
Myself i wouldnt risk it and went manual anyway, much more fun to drive too.
Cost to build one with Kevlar bands etc is generaly around 3k fitted.
ok cool thanks for that genreaper. something to think about this thing seems to go real good as it is at the moment it was just what the bloke who tunes it said to do so just making shore as to what im getting my self into if i do as i have never had a auto. at least the misses can take me home drunk in this one. i wonder if a gearbox shop would swap my t56 to rebuild my gear box that wont break.

i killed my auto after the cam change/mafless tune. got it rebuilt at sure shift automatics in virginia brisvegas. Automatic Transmission Specialists | service l repairs l rebuilds l hi-performance
Sureshift built mine also.
But once it dies I am going for a T400.
Yep, t400 is much better just that you lose your overdrive gear if that matters to you.
Autos with converters last much better with trans coolers. Mine has a HSV trans cooler and a 2800 converter running 308RWKW through it and has lasted 15000km so far with no signs of fatigue.
its hard not to give it a hard time when its a new car and you want to see what its got ok on an another note has any one got a kaz or a true track diff???how do you find them

Stock diff is fine, you dont need either of them, nothing to gain IMO.
ok i have 3.9s turning up in the next day or so so cannot wait. another question what size cam are are people using to the size stall and diff ratio. mine has an early 220s cam in it i wish i could say more but i just dont know any more. i guess so maybe we can see what people like, what works, and how they go on the strip and how they are to drive on the street. well if people want to i guess
