as most of you are aware i am doing a harmonic balancer change, and i have hit a problem. the underdrive balancer has a keyway in it and the old one doesnt.....? is this the right part? can i still use it?
cheers,
Colin
Wouldnt worry about it mate its interference fit.
Just use loctite on the bolt.
Keyway is more so for Supercharged setups and there is alot more strain and pressure on the balancer for driving the supercharger.
I would also be tempted to put some high temperature silicon in the keyway and on the flange of the balancer bolt " not the threads " just use loctite on the thread.
That way the oil cant seep past your front balancer bolt.
I would let it dry for a day before i drove it as well.
often parts for older engines and cars are re-used on newer engines and cars, they simply use the same measurements. You may find that your new balancer also fits a newer engine, which may have a keyway. It saves on manufacturing costs for replacement parts.
I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere
awesome.. thanks guys. i now have an issue on getting the blastard thing on there. ive got it as far as 3-4mm to go. even tried baking it in the oven for a while, as it worked to get the standard one back on last time i had it off. bloody hell its a hassle. just wont budge!
Dunno, maybe take the front bar off, radiator out, lift up the air conditioner condensor a bit and put a solid block of wood thru the front and smack it with a small sledge.
Just make sure if you do that to hit the inner part of the balance not the outer or you will wreck the rubber separator.
Are the balancer bolts TTY?
haha tried using a solid steel pipe and sledge.... it aint moving on! all its doing is squishing the ends of the pipe. grrr.
